Not everyone has the mental bandwidth to deal with lice, especially when it’s the outcome of a decision they never wanted to make in the first place!
An internet user asked, “Am I a jerk for turning around and going back to my parents with my baby when I got home because my husband let his homeless brother move in and everyone had lice?”. We need you to find out.
Backstory
The Original Poster (OP) recently went to see her parents with her newborn.
“It was just for the long weekend so my husband stayed home with our three older children.”, says OP.
What Happened When OP Was Out Of Town
OP’s husband called her when she was out of town to let her know his brother needed a place to crash.
OP said that he should give him a ride to a shelter or something because it was a bad idea to let his brother into their home. “He has stolen from us before.”, says OP.
When OP Got Back Home
When OP got home, five very itchy people were in the house. OP immediately returned to her car and went to her parents’ house. OP’s husband was calling her the whole time because he needed help dealing with the lice.
“I didn’t call him back until the baby was settled back in at my folk’s place.”, says OP.
What Did OP Do Next?
OP told him the pharmacy had the shampoo and comb for lice. He said he needed her to come home and take care of it. OP denied. OP said that he let his brother in their home against her wishes, and his brother gave them all lice.
“I also reminded him that when our oldest got lice from kindergarten, he didn’t help me at all”, says OP.
OP Refused To Give In
OP hates lice. They freak her out. She dealt with it in the past because she had to. This time, she thinks it’s on her husband. He said he would have to use his sick days to take care of this. OP said that’s tough.
He Did It
He did it. He took his brother to a shelter, he deloused himself and the kids, and then he spent three days cleaning all the bedding and the furniture. He called OP every day begging for help.
“I did not come home until his mother confirmed that everything was done.”, says OP.
What Does OP Say?
“He is annoyed that I stuck him with all that by himself. I know I should have helped, but it was too much. I’m still not 100% from the baby. It was just too much.”, says OP.
He Stuck It To Himself
“Not the jerk. You didn’t ‘stick him’ with anything. He stuck it to himself by bringing someone who’s violated your trust into the house against your, and probably his, better judgment. Hopefully, he’ll learn something from it.”
Play Stupid Games, Win Stupid Prizes
“Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Not a jerk at all. He asked, and you said no, he did it anyway. Hope he learned a valuable lesson.”
This Was His Responsibility To Handle
“Not the jerk at all. Your husband clearly knew you did not want his brother staying there and let him anyway. He has to deal with the aftermath of his bad decision, you just had a baby, and this was his responsibility to handle. Good for you for sticking up for yourself and not giving in.”
Your Newborn’s Care Should Be Your Priority
“Not the jerk, you are taking care of your newborn. Lice carries several diseases. He and the kids might not get any of them, but the newborn will. Keep the newborn at your parent’s home until a professional exterminator gives it the all clear.”
