No one should think they have the right to someone else’s money, even if they’re very close to them.
The Original Poster (OP) took it to the forum, and asked “Am I wrong for expecting my wife to support my elderly parents?”. We want to know from you.
BACKSTORY
OP’s wife has a high-paying job and earns significantly more than OP does. OP works as a teacher and makes around 40k, while his wife works in the private sector and makes around 300-400k post tax deductions.
HOW DO THEY SPLIT THEIR FINANCES?
OP and his wife split their finances equitably, with his wife paying 70% and OP paying 30%.
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT OP’S WIFE’S SIDE OF FAMILY
OP has two sisters. OP’s wife’s parents immigrated to the country many years back so their daughters could succeed. And they did!
OP’s wife has a great job, one is in the tech industry, and another one is a surgeon. All of them are heavily compensated, and the parents get pension as well.
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT OP’S SIDE OF FAMILY
OP’s parents worked government jobs, and his sister lives on benefits.
OP’S WIFE HELPED OP’S SISTER IN THE PAST
OP’s wife helped his younger sister when she became a single mother at a young age by offering her a secretary job at her office, but his sister quit after a month as she found it too complicated. OP found it quite logical as she was raising a child on her own.
HER PARENTS RETIRED
Recently, OP’s wife’s parents retired, and she and her sisters each have been giving them 2k every month ever since they retired.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
OP asked his wife to help his parents, too, as they have also retired recently. But OP’s wife said that OP should do it with his money, as she helps her parents with her own money as well.
OP GOT FURIOUS
OP got angry because all of his wife’s sisters have high-paying jobs, whereas OP’s parents have nobody except him to rely on. His wife makes a lot of money so he thinks that it is only fair if she helps out his parents as well.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
OP’s wife was unconvinced and said that it was her duty to look after her own parents because they had sacrificed a lot for her.
She also said that it was unfair on OP’s part to ask for money from her to look after his parents, as she never asked OP for more money for household needs.
OP thinks that his wife is cheap and is wrong for not helping out his parents. Now OP wants to know if this is right?
WHAT DO PEOPLE THINK?
“Kinda gives off the vibe that he feels he and his family are entitled to her money.”, said one user.
SHAME ON HIM
“Shame on him for expecting his wife to shoulder nearly all responsibilities for child care, household, and finances for his family.”, said another user.
