We can get so used to the way society thinks about what’s right for boys or girls that we start thinking some things are only for one gender.
A user asked, Am I wrong for not going inside Victoria’s Secret with my girlfriend?
Backstory:
The Original Poster (OP) is a 20-year-old male. He was shopping at the local mall with his girlfriend (F20), and she decided she wanted to go to Victoria’s Secret.
For those who don’t know, that’s a women’s underwear store.
What Happened Next?
When his girlfriend entered, he stayed outside the store and sat on a bench. She was confused and returned to him, asking why he didn’t come with her.
What Does OP Say
OP says, “I told her I don’t want to go inside because it’s a women’s underwear store. She got mad and told me nobody cared, so just come. I refused because I feel weird going into a store like that and don’t want to make the women there uncomfortable. My girlfriend got upset and decided to end the day and go home. She said I ruined the day by not going into a freaking store.”
OP wants to know if he is a jerk for not going inside the store with her. What do you think? Here is what others think:
She Wanted To Have Fun With You
“NAH – Dude, she’s not mad at you for not entering the store. She’s mad at you for not going into the store with her. She wanted to do something fun, flirty, and naughty with you. And you goofed.”
They Welcome Men and Women With Partners
“I used to work at VS. We always had male customers, especially around the holidays! Many needed help buying lingerie and other gifts for their wives and girlfriends, and it was all perfectly fine.
Many of them even seemed relieved when they realized how non-judgy and ready we were to help them lol”
You Are Not Wrong
“Not wrong….but kinda dumb. You have very young relationship vibes. You are not a jerk to me because you are entitled to not go into a store if you don’t want to, and she overreacted.
Idk about your area, but at the Victoria’s Secret in my mall, the population is about 50/50 shopping there, as in half men, half women. Women who would be highly uncomfortable about a man being there (not a reasonable expectation, fyi) shop online, not in a mall.”
You Are Silly
“Lol. Not a jerk, but this is just silly. A man tagging along with his SO isn’t going to make any women in there feel uncomfortable. You should’ve instead told your gf that you’re uncomfortable (actual truth) and not blamed all the other unsuspecting customers. It’s just undies; go in the store next time.”
You Are Wrong
“You are wrong.
I don’t think most women will have any issue with you being in there when you are with your girlfriend. And if you were going around with a store employee because you want some help navigating women’s lingerie to get her a gift, they’d understand that too. And the fact that she wanted you to go in says that she wanted your input for something you’d like to see her in during bedroom fun time.
I can understand her being upset because many men refuse to go into those stores simply because “that’s for girls, and I’m a guy, and I won’t be caught dead in there.” Maybe put on your big boy shorts, apologize, and suggest returning, yeah?”
