Why do some people insist on interfering in other people’s business, even when they don’t know what they’re talking about? An internet user asked, “Am I a jerk for trying to tell my friend he’s not a millionaire?”. We need to hear your thoughts.
Backstory
The Original Poster’s (OP’s) friend thinks he’s hot since he inherited his grandparent’s home. “It’s a large house worth approximately a million dollars.”, says OP.
How Does He Make Up For The Taxes?
OP’s friend rents out several bedrooms of the inherited home to make up for the taxes because he can’t afford the pay the taxes of the home on his own.
What Did He Do At The Club?
OP’s friend went to the club and introduced himself to a couple of girls as an investment advisor and took them back to his place to have some intimacy and swim in the pool.
“He told the girls he’s a millionaire and basically lied to them for some rumpy pumpy.”, said OP.
What Did OP Do Next?
OP told him it’s cringe because he’s not even a millionaire just because his house is worth it. OP’s friend laughed in his face saying that the home is an asset and is paid off. So, technically, he is a millionaire if he decides to sell his house today.
The Final Fuss
OP told him houses aren’t liquid assets, so it’s not really like he’s one. He blocked OP and all of their other friends are acting like OP is a jerk for even saying anything but OP thinks it’s deceiving and cringe for him to go around telling everyone he’s a millionaire when he just inherited dead people’s property.
So, is OP the jerk here?
That’s How Things Are!
“Your friend is correct. If he owns the house free and clear, he’s a millionaire. Most millionaires don’t actually have cash on hand. It’s all tied up in assets, and real estate is included in that valuation.”
Try To Be A Better Friend, Maybe?
“He technically is a millionaire based upon the value of his assets. He is leveraging this to get women, so be it. Good for him in fact if that is where he is at in life. Did he cheat on a girlfriend or do anything to hurt you? If not, you’re the jerk. Be a better friend.”
You Don’t Even Know What You’re Talking About, Do You?
“You are very wrong about your friend not being a millionaire.Owning a home or any other asset worth a million dollars makes one a millionaire. The liquidity of the asset is irrelevant.
So yeah, you’re a jerk here.Don’t opine on topics you know nothing about.”
You Both Are In The Wrong
“Everyone’s in the wrong. You’re wrong. Having a million-dollar asset, regardless if it’s inherited or not, makes him a millionaire. It may not be liquid, but he’s a millionaire nonetheless. He’s awful because he’s a bragging jerk.”
Deal With This Differently
“Well, it’s true he’s not a millionaire but he’s closer to escaping poverty than most people are or will ever be.
He’s a jerk and he’s cringe for lying. You’re right about that but the way you said it makes you come off as jealous and not a real friend. You should approach this kind of thing with more tact if you, indeed, think of him as your friend.”
