The Original Poster (OP) took it to the forum, and asked “Am I wrong for yelling at my family for getting me a birthday cake I don’t want for 15 months in a row?”. We want to know from you.
BACKSTORY
OP was born one day after her cousin. Ever since she was little, their family had been celebrating both of their birthdays together as a single event.
THEY ALWAYS HAD THE SAME CAKE
Since childhood, OP and her cousin always shared one single cake. As the cousin was older, she used to receive a lot of gifts, whereas OP almost received nothing throughout these years.
WHAT KINDS OF GIFTS WOULD OP GET?
OP’s cousin would always get fancy toys, expensive dolls, etc., whereas OP would get something like a $10 Walmart gift card or something.
OP’S RELATIONSHIP WITH HER COUSIN
OP’s cousin had always been nice to her. She would always share her gifts with OP just to put a smile on OP’s face.
18TH BIRTHDAY
It was OP’s 18th birthday this year, and as usual, their family decided to host a single event to celebrate both of their birthdays.
WHAT DID OP’S MOTHER PROMISE HER?
OP’s mother promised her a separate birthday cake this year as it was her 18th birthday. She promised to give her an Oreo ice cream cake (OP’s favorite).
THE BIRTHDAY PARTY
On her birthday, her entire family and relatives gathered in one place. OP and her cousin took their respective spots for the cake-cutting ceremony.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
Everyone started singing, and OP’s mother brought a cake and placed it in front of her cousin. It was a strawberry cheesecake. After that, her cousin blew candles, and everyone clapped. Then OP’s aunt started cutting the cake.
WHERE WAS OP’S CAKE?
OP asked her mother about her cake, to which she replied that the strawberry cheesecake was for both of them.
THE CAKE ONLY HAD HER COUSIN’S NAME
OP’s cousin quickly jumped in to defend her and said that the cake only had her name and that OP was supposed to get her own cake this year.
OP’s mother and all her relatives dismissed OP’s feelings and tried to shut her up. OP then finally lost her calm and yelled at everyone at the party, and left. OP’s cousin and her brother both defended OP and stayed by her side.
Now, OP asks if she is a jerk for yelling at her family on her birthday.
