It is important to stand up to meanness, but it is also important to be forgiving. We should not let people walk all over us, but we should also be willing to let go of grudges.
The Original Poster (OP) took it to the forum, and asked “Am I wrong for demanding my coworker to pay me for a ride to work after many months of giving her a free ride?”. We want to know from you.
BACKSTORY
OP had been offering free rides to work to one of her colleagues for the last fourteen months. She never asked for money and didn’t receive it.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
On the weekend, OP’s car went to the shop. That is why OP didn’t have a ride to go anywhere.
WHAT DID OP TELL HER COWORKER?
OP told her coworker that her car wasn’t with her so she wouldn’t be able to give her a ride on monday and on tuesday.
WHAT DID THE COWORKER SAY?
The coworker said that it wasn’t an issue because her boyfriend had an off that week and he would give her a ride.
OP ASKED FOR A RIDE
OP asked her coworker to give her a ride on those two days.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
The coworker went and asked her boyfriend if he would mind giving a ride to OP along with her.
WHAT DID THE BOYFRIEND SAY?
The boyfriend agreed on giving OP a ride, but he also demanded $20 in return.
WHAT WAS OP’S REACTION?
Even though it was just $20, OP got upset, considering that she had been giving her coworker free rides for more than a year. OP told her that she no longer needed a ride and that she would arrange her own ride.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
After 2 days, OP’s coworker again asked for a ride. This time OP said that she would have to pay $30 every week if she wanted a ride. OP also pointed out that she had been offering her free rides for fourteen months, and that her boyfriend should have appreciated that.
OP WANTS TO KNOW
OP now asks people on the forum if she is a jerk for asking her coworker to pay her for a ride to work after months of giving her daily free rides?
WHAT DO PEOPLE THINK?
“She should have explained to him how for over a year, you gave her free rides and asking for money was tacky of him. But she didn’t, she just went along with it.
She showed you what she thought of your kindness and friendship. You’re just showing her the same.”, said one user.
SHE SHOULD HAVE CHIPPED IN
“I mean if I was getting free rides indefinitely I’d be chipping in for gas even if there was no change in routes.
That’s how a bunch in a previous office I worked in did it, they’d meet up by a friend’s place in the route of the guy with the car.”, said another user.
