Stealing from folks at a wedding just to fund your own trips is a pretty strange thing to do, isn’t it?
The Original Poster (OP) took it to the forum, and asked “Am I wrong for exposing my friend’s reason for a cash bar at her wedding?”. We want to hear from you.
BACKSTORY
OP’s friend recently got married. She was on a tight budget as she was trying to save up for the honeymoon.
DREAMY WEDDING
Although OP’s friend was on a budget, she has some really good connections that helped her create an amazing dreamy wedding within her budget.
HER CONNECTIONS
The wedding venue was a gift from her uncle, who owns a wedding venue in New England. Her catering was gifted to her by a friend who owns a fantastic restaurant. Her flowers were a gift from her aunt, who is a florist.
Their rings were heavily discounted by a friend who works for a jewelry company and let her use their discount. Her DJ and photographer were also gifts, as one of the members of the wedding party has a family event entertainment business.
HER MAIN EXPENSES
OP’s friend’s most significant expenses with the wedding were her dress and the rings.
A CASH BAR
There was a cash bar at the wedding. OP found it quite logical as both the bride and groom were non-drinkers, so it was totally understandable that they wouldn’t want to fund anyone else’s booze, especially when they are on a budget.
HONEYMOON
After the wedding, OP’s friend and her husband went on their honeymoon in Italy. They stayed there for about a month.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
Almost two months after the wedding, OP and her friend got together for dinner. Her friend was showing her honeymoon pictures and they were having a great time chatting.
SHE DROPPED A BOMB
Suddenly, halfway through dinner, OP’s friend dropped a bomb. She told OP that a family member of hers owns a liquor store and gifted all the alcohol for her wedding to them, all she had to do was find someone to be the bartender.
She asked one of the event bartenders at her uncle’s venue if they wanted to make some extra cash. She offered them 20 an hour plus tips and then told all of her guests that the bar was cash, and they used that money to fund their honeymoon.
OP GOT FURIOUS
OP got furious after listening to this. She understood that her friend literally robbed everyone to sponsor their honeymoon trip, and OP felt it was unfair.
She got up and told her friend to pay for the dinner as she already made a lot of money off of OP and everyone else at her wedding. She left and texted in the friend’s group chat and revealed everything.
FRIENDS WERE ANGRY
A lot of the other friends were angry after hearing about this. OP is quite certain that she won’t be able to look past this and continue the friendship, but is also feeling a little guilty of revealing her friend’s secret to the other friends.
Now OP wants to know if what she did was wrong.
WHAT DO PEOPLE THINK?
“So many people contributed services and things for the wedding, but then she charged premium prices for a cash bar. Not cool on her part.”, said one user.
SHE HAS NO BUDGET FOR ANYTHING
“From the sound of it, she had no budget and everything was handed to her, including her honeymoon. Everything was gifted to her except her dress and rings.”
THIS IS MANIPULATION
That’s not much of a wedding budget. Manipulating your guests into spending more money so you don’t have to, is cheap. She deserves your anger and dismissal.”, said another user.
