He had a special dinner in mind to celebrate getting engaged, but his fiancée’s intense love for their dog made the evening less romantic.
A user asked the forum if he was a jerk for leaving the engagement dinner due to his fiance’s obsession with the dog.
BACKSTORY
The original poster ( OP ) recently proposed to his girlfriend. OP and his fiance are planning the wedding to happen next year.
OP’s fiance has a 5-year-old golden retriever mix. OP had a few bad experiences with dogs as a kid.
DOG GETS ALL THE ATTENTION
Because OP’s fiance’s dog was very friendly, the dog gets all the attention from his fiance. OP says his fiance denied some jobs that won’t let her work from home as she worried about the dog.
OP says he works from home three days a week, and his fiance only texts to enquire about the dog.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT
OP planned a trip last weekend to celebrate their engagement. He booked a nice hotel and made reservations at a nice restaurant.
And also added that one of their close friends stayed with the dog.
WHAT DID THE FIANCE ASK
OP’s fiance asked the friend to text with an update every two hours. OP says that he did his best to make it a wonderful weekend.
OP said they had a reservation at 7 p.m. at the restaurant, but his fiance didn’t get ready until 6.40 as she hadn’t heard from the sitter.
SHE SPENT ENTIRE DINNER TEXTING
OP addressed that when they arrived at the restaurant, they had to wait 30 minutes for a table to open and when OP and his fiance sat down, she spent the entire dinner on her phone trying to get ahold of the friend.
OP GOT UPSET
OP paid for the meal and got up, telling his fiance that he would wait in the car. His fiance came out 20 minutes later, screaming at OP for leaving her at the table alone.
OP YELLED BACK
OP yelled back at her, saying she ruined the engagement trip by putting a dog over them. OP says they sat silently all the way home, and his fiance was thinking about staying with her parents.
OP’s fiance calls him a jerk for leaving her alone at the restaurant dinner table.
SHE HAS BEEN MARRIED TO THE DOG
‘Call off the engagement – she’s already married to the dog.”
MOVE ON
‘She does care about the dog a lot, but to the point where she is rejecting jobs and texting every two hours is too much. You all aren’t compatible. Get your ring back and move on.”
SHE HAS ANXIETY
OP, your girlfriend likely has anxiety issues. Work on finding a sitter she trusts because she needs to survive more than 2 hours without constant updates, and she also needs to be able to work.
I feel she’s turning stuff down for more than just dog reasons. Plus, my dogs contributed to my wanting to WFH, and luckily, I found something I love. I also like to nap, sO that was a big factor, lol.
This is more than her loving her dog, and she probably had some anxiety.
