Co-parenting is a complex and challenging endeavor, but it is essential to approach it with a willingness to communicate and collaborate. Even when things are difficult, it is important to remember that your child’s well-being is the most important thing.
The Original Poster (OP) took it to the forum, and asked “Am I wrong for refusing to pay for my son’s wedding if I have to walk him down the aisle with his stepdad?”. We want to hear from you.
BACKSTORY
OP’s son, Karter, is 25, and he is getting married to his fiance, Clark, next month.
OP’S DIVORCE
OP was serving in the military when he and his wife divorced. Karter was way younger back then.
OP’S RELATIONSHIP WITH KARTER
OP and Karter have a good relationship. OP always made an effort to be a good dad to him and spend time with him whenever he was on leave. And after OP left the army, he had spent every moment he could with Karter.
OP’S EX REMARRIED
After their divorce, OP’s ex remarried pretty quickly. She got married to a guy named Steven.
OP’S TAKE ON STEVEN
OP and Steven don’t get along well but OP still acknowledges the fact that Steven treats Karter well.
THE MONEY SITUATION
OP’s ex and Steven are kind of short of money. Karter’s fiance Clark isn’t from a wealthy family either. So, they asked OP if he would foot the bill.
OP AGREED
OP agreed to pay for the wedding because he loves Karter, and he would do anything for him.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
OP recently found out that Karter wanted him and Steven to walk him down the aisle.
OP GOT ANGRY
After hearing about this, OP got angry because he is Karter’s actual dad, and he was the one paying for everything. So, he wanted to be the only one walking Karter down the aisle. He got hurt knowing that Karter wanted some step-parent to accompany him.
THEY GOT INTO AN ARGUMENT
OP and Karter got into a huge argument, and OP told him that he wouldn’t pay for the wedding if Steven walked him down the aisle. OP’s ex thinks that he’s being selfish.
Now OP wants to know if what he is doing is wrong.
WHAT DO PEOPLE THINK?
“You were a big part of why he has two dad’s after you and his mom divorced. That certainly wasn’t his choice. He didn’t ask to have a step dad, but you and your ex wife’s life choices forced that on him. Now you’re jealous that he has a good relationship with his step dad too and want him all to yourself.”, said one user.
HE DOESN’T LOVE YOU ANY LESS
“Wanting both dad’s to walk him down the aisle doesn’t mean he loves you less. And paying for his wedding doesn’t buy his love either. Gonna take some time to dig out of the hole in his trust and love for you that you just dug.”, said another user.
