Usually, people don’t put their grandson’s share in their will. But here’s a story that might make you see things differently.

An internet user asked, “Am I a jerk for making my parents kick my nephew out of their will?” Here’s the full story for you to conclude.

Ever since he’s been the child, OP’s parents swooned over him, and they made excuses for everything he did.

OP has been to therapy because of this for over a decade as she resented him for her parents forgetting about OP when she was younger, even though she loves her parents to death.

OP’s nephew (31M) has basically been raised by OP’s parents as well. His mom passed away during childbirth, and OP’s brother lived with their parents till about 4 years ago when he moved in with his girlfriend.

Because OP’s brother is handicapped and doesn’t have big motor skills, a lot of the child care was taken care of by OP’s parents over the years. Till OP’s nephew moved out of state 5 years ago for his job.

What Happened A Couple Of Weeks Ago?

A couple of weeks ago, OP’s parents were meeting with their lawyer to set up their will, as they’re both no longer in the best of health and wanna make sure their children are taken care of.

The only big thing they have is their house and car. They were talking about how they wanna split the inheritance 3 ways, and OP got confused and asked them why 3 ways considering it’s only OP and her brother.

OP’s Objection

They said they wanted OP’s nephew in there as well, as they have basically raised him since birth and consider him largely as their child too.

OP told them that’s not fair as she has two kids as well and if OP’s nephew is in the will, they should as well.

What Happened Eventually

OP’s brother said that what they’re doing with their money is their business and OP should stay out of it, but she disagreed.

Eventually, OP’s parents agreed and didn’t give her nephew “his share”. OP’s brother called it a giant jerk move and called OP petty to punish her own nephew for the resentment she has towards him.

They broke out into a fight that OP’s parents had to, unfortunately, break up.

Everyone’s Reaction

OP’s nephew called her a couple of days ago to check in on her. He had already heard what happened and just said that it was a bit of Karen’s move to do, but he’s unbothered by it as it’s none of his business, but OP’s brother is still very upset with her and OP’s parents are rather cold to her as well.

“Am I a jerk here?”, asks OP.

Your Reasons Seem Valid

“Not the jerk. OP’s parents brought OP into the conversation about distribution and OP gave the opinion that a will that included the nephew should also include OP’s children.”

That Was A Jerk Move, Indeed

“You’re the jerk, your nephew and your kids are not the same in this situation; your parents practically did raise your nephew, so to them, considering that he is like a son to them is really understandable.

Isn’t this what happened, though? Why was it so important for you that the nephew is not included in the will? It’s your parent’s money, not yours, to share after all.

Sorry that you were the invisible child, but this was a jerk move.”

You Need To Grow Up!

“100% you’re the jerk. Your nephew has a disabled father and a dead mother, and you’re crying about some money not being fair to you? That is just horrible. You’re 47. It’s way past time to grow up.”

They Raised Him Just Like You Two, Right?

“It’s amazing how grabby people get with the possessions of others when the subject of death comes up. They raised him just like they raised the two of you. Would you be saying the same thing if they had simply adopted a third child? Sheesh.”
