As parents, is it your responsibility to teach your sons how to use the toilet while standing up, if that’s what they prefer? If they make a mess, who is responsible for cleaning it?
A user asked the forum, “Am I a jerk for changing the chores unilaterally since my husband wants the boys to stand to urinate?”
BACKSTORY
The Original Poster’s (OP’s) house has three bathrooms. She says that the ensuite is hers.
All of her products are in there, and it’s where she does her business. She says that her husband also uses it, but not for much more than brushing his teeth, grabbing a glass of water, or a midnight pee.
THE MAIN BATHROOM
The main bathroom is the one her husband and three kids use. She also added that the half bath on the main floor is mostly for guests and washing up before meals.
HOW DID OP TRAIN HER SONS?
After they potty trained their sons, she kept ensuring they were sitting to pee.
She says that they are young and don’t care. They can use a urinal when they are out somewhere.
THE ISSUE STARTED
Her brother-in-law was over last month and accidentally saw her oldest boy in the bathroom. She admits that her sons don’t lock the bathroom door yet because they don’t want to get locked in.
WHAT WAS THE REASON HER SON WAS NOT LOCKING THE DOOR?
She says that she knows they are easy to open. But it is easier for now after one gets locked in and has a panic attack.
WHAT DID HER BROTHER IN LAW
Her brother-in-law made a joke about her son not stinking up the bathroom.
HER BIL TOOK OFFENSE AT THIS
Her son told him that he was just peeing. Her BIL took offense at this for some reason and started bugging her husband about his son’s sitting to pee.
WHAT DID HER HUSBAND DO?
Her husband then told the boys that if they were only peeing, they should stand. The boys don’t have great aims but make up for it with a short attention span.
IT WAS GROSS
It was gross when she went to the bathroom after a few days of that. She says that she turned around and walked out.
WHAT DID OP SAY TO HER HUSBAND?
When her husband got home, she told him that he picked up a new chore. She told him that he must now clean the toilets, floors, and walls in the boys’ bathrooms. Her husband said that it wasn’t his turn.
WHAT WAS OP’S REPLY?
She replied that it was his idea for the boys to stand to pee, so he had to deal with the consequences.
HER HUSBAND WAS UPSET
She says her husband did it, but he is upset about her unilaterally making this decision as he did about the boys.
Now OP wants to know who is wrong here.
IT MUST NOT BE SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE
“I will never understand why it’s socially acceptable for boys and grown men to spray bathrooms like tom cats because they choose to stand to urinate. It’s unnecessary and unsanitary. Either aim better, clean up after yourself, or sit.”
HE GETS TO CLEAN IT UP
“Not a jerk. Your boys were fine peeing while sitting; if your husband wants to demand that they stand, he gets to clean it up.
Even if they aim right, there’s probably going to be droplets and splash back that build up, so he gets to do it indefinitely since he changed their routine.”
SITTING DOES NO HARM
“A home toilet is not the same as a wall-mounted public urinal in a men’s room. It’s not really designed for a guy to stand and pee.
Sitting does no harm. It also avoids the mess.”
