The Idealist or the INFJ, which stands for Introverted, Intuitive, Feeling, and Judging, are individuals with rare personalities, and it is hard for them to do normal jobs like others.
A user asked the forum, “What careers do most INFJs go into?”
Here are the common responses.
FREELANCE GRAPHIC DESIGNER
“Full-time freelance graphic designer and illustrator, and I love it. Getting to be in charge of my schedule, pick my clients, and have inspiring projects has been a dream. I worked many corporate art gigs before this that were toxic and hard, but the destination was worth it.”
DATA SCIENTIST
“I’m a data scientist, great pay but miserable overall.”
SOFTWARE ENGINEER
“Software engineer, and I love it. It didn’t take me long to realize that stereotypical INFJ career paths are a great way to be poor, burnt out, and emotionally drained.”
USER INTERFACE AND USER EXPERIENCE DESIGNER
“I am a User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX) designer. It has a mix of psychology plus design, which is the best blend for me, and I’m very happy.”
INFORMATION AND TECHNOLOGY
“I’m in Information and Technology (IT) because of my genuine curiosity for technology and fixing/solving issues, but it isn’t the life-fulfilling work I’d ideally want. It does help people, but to me, not substantially, so after getting some things in order & life debts down, I’ll probably shift gears to different career paths that best align with my purpose.
I also want some kids with my current boyfriend, whose type is Introverted, Intuitive, Thinking, and Perceiving (INTP), so that will give me time to figure out my career change while out of work raising them for the first few years.
People always told me that I should have been a teacher and thought a previous job would help me explore that with a training position offered (still in IT but training others/onboarding), but I have yet to see that come to pass. Maybe someday.”
LAWYER
“I’m a lawyer. I help people, understand their problems, and find solutions. It’s all a great fit so far.”
NEWBORN CARE SPECIALIST
“I nannied for years and then took courses to become a Newborn Care Specialist. I loved it; the pay was decent, and I had some great families I worked for. I found it pretty fulfilling, but then I had a baby myself, and now I want to get into something else as I find myself burnt out.”
ACCOUNTANT
“I’m an accountant, and I’m quite happy with it. It may not be the most fulfilling job, speaking of helping people or making a difference in the world, but it’s a good match for me because I can work by myself and go home as soon as I finish my stuff.”
ECOLOGIST
“I’m an ecologist! I have a degree in it, but am working on getting my driver’s license before I can work as one. I love doing the work in university; collecting data on plants and critters is strangely fun.”
MUSICIAN
“Musician and Mover/Driver. I stick out like a sore thumb at my company, but I like the work (making a stressful time into a seamless operation). So when I get mad, it’s not because something broke; it’s because the move might not be perfect. Additionally, playing music is just fabulous. I fit in there.”
HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER
“High school English teacher. I tried a handful of other careers first (grant writing, community organizing, advertising), but teaching is all I’m suitable for. The work is significant, and since I can teach reading and writing skills through any text, I get to bring in the themes and content that feel important (for them and me) at the given moment.
It’s a lot of time around people, but I don’t find the kids as draining as expected, as long as I can keep them calm in my classroom and not get stuck on cafeteria duty (literal hell). But days with a lot of adult face-time make me question everything.”
MEDICAL BILLING
“Medical billing. I am thriving. I listen to romance novels and history podcasts at work all day while my brain goes into robot mode.”
FOOD SCIENCE
“As an INFJ, I’m studying Food Science and having an internship in a food company’s Research and Development department.”
MEDICAL LAB SCIENTIST
“Medical Lab Scientist. I love healthcare and science and the thought of helping people, but I am not a big fan of being face-to-face with patients, so my role is in the background.
I love it; the pay is good enough (not great).”
MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING RADIOGRAPHER
“I’m a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) radiographer and love it. It pays well, and I can pick up extra shifts. I went into radiography as there was a good balance of technical skill and patient care required.
I wouldn’t say I liked spending too long with patients as I’m pretty introverted, so it works well with what I do. The patient is in and out quite quickly, and there’s minimal chatting, but you still get the rewarding feeling of helping someone, and most patients are very grateful.
MRI is quite technical, so it requires good problem-solving skills. Plus, the images are cool to look at! Even though it is quite computer-based, there’s much moving around and helping patients, etc.”
MILITARY PILOT
“Military Pilot. It was my dream job growing up, and I love it ‘most’ days now, but I don’t always fit the mentality of what you would expect from someone who does it. So, it took many years to overcome the challenges I faced due to not being the typical personality type for this job. It was tough for a while.
Currently, I fly Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC) helicopters, and I love the sense of purpose and fulfillment it gives to get someone on their worst day and get them to help. I also spent my first few years in the military, not as a pilot, and getting waivers for early promotions and stuff like that for my soldiers was my favorite thing in the world.
I also majored in a business degree to get a good job if the pilot thing didn’t work out, and knowing what I know now, I wish I had done psychology/sociology/anthropology.”
PROGRAMMER
“I work as a programmer (self-taught) in Web3 and cryptocurrencies, but my college major is philosophy.”
ASSISTANT MANAGER IN SALES
“I currently work as the assistant manager in my sales store for commercial goods. I’m studying motion graphics and Visual Effects (VFX) alongside music production and ideally would like to be an artist/producer but have always liked psychology or social work.”
PHYSICAL THERAPIST
“I’m currently studying to become a physical therapist! I love it so far!”
CIVIL SERVANT
“I work for the government as a civil servant doing admin work essentially. The perks are great and all that, but it could be more varied and more mentally stimulating. I’m starting to look at getting into something else, in all honesty.”
DEVELOPMENTAL SECTOR
“I’ve been working in the development sector for ten years, and it has been the most fulfilling years of my life.”
CHEMICAL ENGINEER
“I’m studying chemical engineering. Engineers struggle with communication, and even though I may not have the best engineering brain, I can understand people well and communicate effectively.”
PROJECT MANAGER
“Project Manager for a Fortune 100 company. The job calls for too many interactions plus gets overwhelming (for example, audibly overstimulated), but you deal with it after a while.”
