Sometimes, men’s actions, whether intentional or not, can be bothersome for women, causing a bit of disruption to their peace. A user asked the forum, “What is something common that men do that women wish they’d stop doing?”. Here are the common responses.
DISMISS OUR THOUGHTS
“Dismiss our thoughts, ideas, and feelings. Sometimes, if those ideas are good, they steal them too.”
SPITTING
“Spitting. In public, on sidewalks and stuff. I’ve never understood it; what is wrong with you that you must constantly expel everything in your mouth?”
INVALIDATING OUR PAIN
“Invalidate the pain we feel one week every month. ‘It can’t be that bad.’ “You’re overreacting.’ ‘Stop talking about it already.’ Or my favorite, ‘Sheesh. It must be that time again, huh?’ followed by the laughter of all the other men who overhear. Not all men do this, but it’s so common.
I’ve worked several jobs where I was the only girl. Trust me, I was never taken seriously. I was laughed at or told to stop talking when I mentioned I was in pain. It was too gross; they didn’t want to know.
I once said I was about to faint and had to take a break. I saw several men roll their eyes. Some wouldn’t even talk to me again that same day. They thought I’d be hostile and rude.”
ASKING GIRLS FOR THEIR NUMBER
“Asking girls for their number after they’ve told you that they’re taken/not interested. I had one interaction with a guy to whom I mentioned that I already have a boyfriend, who said, ‘Well, I’m a pretty nice guy, too.’ I was ready to throw up then and there.”
NOT BEING HONEST ABOUT THEIR EMOTIONS
“I wish more men would be honest about their emotions and ask for support. I wish they could be more vulnerable, silly, or downright giddy. I wish guys would ask for more hugs and piggyback rides! You guys are strong enough to carry each other, so why are you not giving each other more piggyback rides?”
MASS SHOOTINGS AND WARS
“Probably mass shootings and declaring war.”
CATCALLING
“Catcalling. You all seem to believe it’s ‘harmless’ and should be considered a compliment. Trafficking is very real. Also, has that honestly ever worked for you? You expect me to melt into your arms with that?”
APPROACHING WOMEN NEAR THEIR CAR
“Approaching women in their car to ‘compliment’ them or ask for their number. Never approach a woman while she’s trying to get into her car; it’s scary no matter what.”
DROPPING CLOTHES ALL OVER THE HOUSE
“Dropping their clothes all over the house. I put hampers everywhere. Still, t-shirts wind up on a chair, bed, or floor.”
NOT TAKING WOMEN SERIOUSLY
“Not taking women seriously when in a discussion where all parties have equal knowledge about something. In general, women have to push 10x harder to be listened to because they’re guys, so they respect each other, but they won’t listen to a woman out of some subconscious thought that ‘she doesn’t know her thing as well as we do, so she has to prove herself before we make the effort of listening.'”
VOCALIZING VIOLENT FANTASIES
“Vocalizing weird, violent fantasies. The number of times I’ve heard a man say something like, ‘If X did this to me, I would [insert a very detailed description of some violent thing].’
It’s weird, a turn-off, and it honestly just makes me nervous to be around you because you think about this a lot. I won’t say ‘every man does this.’ but I’ve heard it multiple times, and only men do it.”
BLOWING YOUR NOSE
“Blowing your nose without a tissue. That snot rocket to the sidewalk is vomit-inducing.”
PRETENDING
“Pretending that they don’t know how to do basic things so that we have to end up doing it.”
BEING PROTECTIVE
“Being protective. My husband went out of town for a week and told a friend to ‘look out for me.’ I was single and lived alone until I was 37; I’ll be okay for a week.
LYING
“Lying about your height. If I’m 5’9″ in heels, how come I am the same height as my date, who claims he is ‘6ft’?”
MANLY HOBBIES
“Playing video games. Working on cars, pretty much any manly hobby.”
SOCKS
“Socks. His socks are everywhere. If you want me to ‘smile,’ darling, keep your socks in the laundry or on your feet.”
