The world is constantly changing, and what was once considered valid isn’t anymore. This can be seen in everything from technology to culture to our understanding of the universe. A user asked the forum, “What’s something that used to be true that isn’t anymore?”
Here are some responses he got!
REPAIR OVER REPLACEMENT
“It’s cheaper to repair than replace something.”
ENTRY-LEVEL JOBS TO FUND COLLEGE
“You could pay your full year’s university tuition by working an entry-level summer job.”
DON’T RELY ON CALCULATORS
“You’re not going to have a calculator in your pocket everywhere you go constantly.”
A GOOD DEGREE AFFORDS BASIC NEEDS
“If you work hard in school, get a good degree, and work for it, you’ll be able to afford basic needs (a house, a car, kids)
My grandpa had a 6th-grade education and went to work at a Coca-Cola bottling plant at 15. He married at 18, bought a house at 19, and raised a family (3 sons, my grandma stayed at home). He even had enough money for a yearly vacation.
It isn’t true at all in 2023. Not in the least.”
LOYALTY REWARDED
“Being loyal to a company will get you rewarded.”
DISNEY BEING CHEAP
“Disney used to be cheap. I remember people flipped out when it went from $22 to $32 per ticket, and an annual pass was $200.”
CAMERA NEVER LIES
“These days, there are Artificial Intelligence-generated images and deep fake videos. So, a camera could lie.”
TRAVELING WITH STRANGERS IS UNSAFE
“Don’t get in cars with strangers. Especially those you meet over the internet.”
PREFERENCE OF CALLS OVER TEXT

PRINTED STUFF IS SYMBOL OF TRUST

EGGS ARE GOOD FOR YOU OR BAD
“First it was: ‘Eggs are the perfect health food’. A few years later, it was ‘Eggs are very high in cholesterol’. A few years later, it was ‘Eggs are high in protein.’
A few years later, it is now ‘Eggs will give you a heart attack’. Now it’s again, ‘Eggs are healthy for you’. I really can’t keep up with this. I’m not sure what it is this time.”
SEWING SAVES MONEY
“That you can save money by sewing your clothing. Ready-to-wear clothing used to be more expensive, but with the rise of manufacturing overseas and now fast fashion, it hasn’t been cheaper to make your clothes since probably the 80s.
I sew as a hobby to have a custom fit, but usually, the fabric costs as much as just buying something readymade.”
EAT TO GROW BIG
“Eat your food, and you will grow big and strong! Just look at me now, a fat adult.”
MCDONALDS FOR UNDER $5
“You could eat at McDonalds for under $5.”
SUMMERS ARE PERFECT FOR GOING OUTDOORS
“Summer is so lovely, perfect for going outdoors.
Now, it is not summer, but fire season/heatwave season/drought season, and you can’t comfortably leave the house before sunset. It will only get worse.”
