People use expressions in their everyday speech all the time. While some expressions are harmless and can add flavor to a conversation, others can be overused to the point of being annoying.
A user asked the forum, “What is an expression people use so often it drives you nuts?” Here are some responses he got!
THE WORD TRIGGER
“Some people seem to think it means something offended them or made them upset. And not, you know. Trigger someone who, for example, has PTSD and gets triggered into a flashback or similar things.”
GASLIGHTING
“I hate that people call everything “gaslighting.” Usually, they refer to a normal disagreement.”
IRREGARDLESS
“It drives me nuts (lol, that’s someone else’s pet peeve. Sorry, person!) that people still say it. Regardless. it’s just regardless!.”
JOURNEY
“Everything is called a “journey.”
IN A SITUATION WHERE “IT IS WHAT IT IS”
“Have you ever been in a situation where “it is what it is” is the only answer? It’s maddening. Over the summer, I shattered a bone in my hand and had to have surgery.
My hand has been non-functional since. When people ask me about it, I say, “it is what it is,” despite hating the phrase. It’s functional, a simplified and colloquial way of saying, “I can’t do anything about this, so whatever.”
COMMENT “THIS” ON POSTS
“Not a phrase, but when people comment “this” on posts.”
COWORKER SAID “SUPOSEBLY”
“Not an expression, but an old coworker said “suposebly” all of the time, and it drove me up the wall.”
MISUSE OF THE WORD ‘LITERALLY’
Any misuse of the word ‘literally,’ like “I am literally starving. ”
“If you have eaten something within the last 12 hours and aren’t diabetic, you are not dying. You are just hungry.”
“SO I DID A THING!”
“Even though I’m guilty of using this expression myself.”
OVERUSED THE WORD “ICONIC”
“In the last few years, people have overused the word “iconic” to the point that it’s lost meaning. If something is truly iconic, it’s timeless, warrants worship, and permeates across cultures.
Icons, or iconic things, should be few and far between. We’ve essentially reduced the word to be interchangeable with “amazing.”
“I UNDERSTAND YOU’RE GOING THROUGH”
“I understand what you’re going through.” from people who don’t care enough, it is just them showing pity (and how do I know? If you’ve heard anyone say this, you just know it).”
KISS IN YOUR HEART
“Here in Brazil, people say “beijo no coração,” which translates to kiss in your heart. I’m always like, No way, leave my heart alone.”
NOTHING WORSE THAN
“Nothing worse than yes, Susan, there are worse things than an undercooked Victoria sponge.”
BOOTSTRAPS
“Pull yourself up by your bootstraps.”
“Have you seen the price of bootstraps? In this economy? No, seriously, my bootstraps are now thongs. That’s how much I’ve been yanking them.”
TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT
“To make a long story short”
“Nope, you just made a short story longer.”
