The Original Poster (OP) took it to the forum, and asked “Am I wrong for embarrassing a plus-sized passenger on a flight?”. We want to know from you.
BACKSTORY
OP was traveling on a flight from Las Vegas to New York.
THE SEATING ARRANGEMENT
She was assigned a middle seat. Both the passengers on either side of her seat were plus-sized.
THE DISCOMFORT
OP was highly uncomfortable as the shoulders of those two passengers were on hers, and their thighs were on her thighs as well.
Plane seats are extremely narrow, and that made things pretty difficult for OP.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
After some time, OP got up and went up to the flight attendant and explained her situation in detail. She requested another seat so that she could be comfortable for the rest of the journey.
MOVING TO ANOTHER SEAT
As requested by OP, the flight attendant found a seat for her. OP took her stuff, got up, and moved to the new seat.
PASSENGERS’ REACTION
Although everyone saw her move, nobody really said or bothered much. The people on the flight were pretty chill.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
After she landed in New York, she saw that the lady was waiting outside for her.
THE CONFRONTATION
The woman accused OP of disrespecting plus-sized bodies.
She also accused her of publicly demonstrating to everyone that plus-sized people are an “inconvenience” and of opening the door to fatphobia on flights.
WHAT DO PEOPLE THINK?
“You did not make a “public demonstration” nor contribute to fatphobia in any way. You weren’t comfortable and you discretely asked for another seat.”, said one user.
“As a fat person, I don’t want to invade other people’s space if I can help it. I’d be glad for the extra wiggle room, but also happy for OP that they were able to find a more comfortable seat.”, said another user.
OP PAID FOR ONE SEAT, NOT FOR A HALF
“OP paid for the use of one seat, not for a half. This woman must have realized that she was partly on OP’s seat.
And that there is another fuller person on the other side. Why should OP fly several hours like a sardine if there are other possibilities?”
