When it comes to naming your child, there are many factors to consider. You want to choose a name that you and your partner love, that’s meaningful to you, and that your child will be proud to wear. But there’s one other factor that’s often overlooked.
A user asked the forum, “Am I a jerk not wanting my son to literally be named John Doe?”
BACK STORY
The original poster’s (OP) last name is Doe.
OP says that it hasn’t affected his life much, apart from occasionally being called “Dodo” while growing up or friends spelling it “D’Oh” as a joke, and he was generally pretty neutral about it.
HIS WIFE’S CHOICE
OP’s wife is six months pregnant and wants to name their future son after her grandfather, who died of cancer in September. His name was John.
HE DOESN’T CONSIDER IT
OP says he liked her grandfather and knows he and his wife were very close, but OP says that he wouldn’t even consider it, not even for their son’s middle name.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
OP feels that’s just setting his son up in a world of problems, especially when he grows up and has to apply for jobs. OP says that nobody’s going to believe “John Doe” is his real name.
OP’s WIFE IS ANGRY
OP’s wife thinks that he is being a jerk for vetoing a name with a strong family connection and says that OP was 10. cunning man the issues he would face.
OP asks if he is a jerk for thinking as such.
IT IS NOT A GOOD IDEA
“Naming your kid John Doe is a stupid idea. He’d share a name with unidentified male corpses.
Maybe Grandpa had a middle name?”
IT WILL CAUSE YOUR SON DIFFICULTY
That child will have that name for a lifetime. Don’t make a baby’s life difficult from the start by naming him that. Suggest that you name him after his grandfather’s middle name.
Someone is actually named John Doe, and some of the issues he has (getting stopped and interviewed by airport security every time). I get why your wife wants to recognize her grandfather, but she has to know how much trouble this will cause in the future.
MY FRIEND GOT ARRESTED
“I have a friend whose name is John Doe. It’s caused him a world of trouble growing up and even worse now as an adult. He almost got arrested once when a police officer asked him for his name after a serious accident, and he didn’t have identification on him. He also mentioned that he doesn’t get interviews as often as his twin with a normal name.”
DON’T DO IT
“This will cause major medical paperwork problems. DON’T DO IT.”
