Is it okay for you to take your family, especially the younger ones to class and then get mad at anyone who calls you out for distracting them during study?
A user asked the forum, “Am I a jerk for taking my nephew to class with me?”. Read the complete story to know who is wrong here.
BACKSTORY
The Original Poster (OP) (19) just had her nephew (5) for a week while her sister and BIL took care of a family emergency. It was very last minute. They called and asked if she could keep him, and he was at her apartment an hour and a half later (they’re an hour away from her).
OP’S SITUATION
OP is a full-time college student, and she works at a daycare part-time. She couldn’t drive him to his school and pick him up because of the distance.
WHAT DID OP DO?
So she emailed all of her professors and also her boss and asked if her nephew could come to class/work with her. They were seemed ok with it.
HOW DID HIS NEPHEW BEHAVE?
When she took him to class, her nephew had an iPad, headphones, a little Lego set, and coloring books and crayons. He sat quietly in the back of class every day. He was also great at her work.
WHAT’S THE ISSUE?
The problem is, now she has people in a few of her classes upset that she brought him. They’re saying it’s distracting, and she should’ve gotten a babysitter instead of taking him with her.
WHAT IS OP’S OPINION?
None of her professors had a problem with it. Some even complimented her on how well-behaved he was, but she wanted to know if she was a jerk.
IT WILL BE HIS FONDEST MEMORY
“Not a jerk.
People need to get over themselves. I guarantee that your nephew will remember this time that you took care of him, and it will be among his fondest memories.
He sounds like a good kid.”
KUDOS TO YOUR NEPHEW
“Not a jerk, and kudos to your nephew for sitting quietly and self-entertaining himself. Sounds better behaved than some of your fellow students. Heck, when I went to college, there were parents who brought babies to class on occasion. Nobody had a problem with it.”
YOU HAVE GOT PERMISSION FROM THE AUTHORITIES
“Not a jerk.
You got permission from the people who had the authority to give it. Your classmates shouldn’t be any more distracted by a quiet kid than another quiet classmate.”
YOU HAVE RECEIVED PERMISSION FOR IT
“Not a jerk. It was a temporary, emergency situation, that you received permission for. You even had the thought to bring quiet activities to keep him busy. The fact that the professors complimented you on him shows that he was well-behaved.
If they believed he was a large distraction, they most likely would have pulled you aside after class and told you so.”
