PTSD is a complex and challenging condition, and some people find that following specific rituals can help them manage their symptoms.
The Original Poster (OP) took it to the forum, and asked “Am I wrong for taking a bluetooth speaker with me when I camp?”. We want to know from you.
BACKSTORY
OP is 38 years old and he got PTSD from his time in the military.
WHAT BOTHERS OP?
OP finds silence uncomfortable to terrifying, depending on his mental state.
WHAT DID OP’S WIFE GIFT HIM?
OP’s wife gifted him a waterproof and impact-proof Bluetooth speaker as a graduation present.
HOW DOES HE USE IT?
He usually plays it on a low volume so that only he can hear it and nobody else.
WHAT DOES HE LISTEN TO?
He usually listens to audio tapes or audiobooks when he is alone in his camp.
WHO SUGGESTED IT?
OP’s therapist called it sound therapy and recommended it for me for his PTSD.
WHY DOESN’T OP USE EARBUDS?
OP doesn’t use earbuds because they are not durable enough to last outside after snow or a downpour. His speaker works great, but the earbuds are toast (he even lost a few pairs).
Also, the speaker holds charge in negative temperatures, and the earbuds don’t.
WHERE EXACTLY IS OP?
OP isn’t in a shelter, nor is he in a public campground. He is in the national forest land often on unmarked trails. The camps are his own or the ones that are backpacking only.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
Recently, two older guys said that backpacking in a camp is to prevent electronic pollution. He told them to hike farther along because that was as far as OP usually travels. They grumbled but kept going.
Now OP wants to know if what he does is wrong?
WHAT DO PEOPLE THINK?
“Being that you are playing audiobooks, not music with a bass that might carry further – the ‘sound pollution’ as those two termed it is unlikely to be any greater than if you were backpacking with a buddy and chatting to each other.”, said one user.
THEY ARE ENTITLED TO THEIR OPINION
“Those two men were entitled to their opinion – they choose, one assumes, to leave behind all technology when backpacking, as is fine for them. You have a medical need for the white noise of a human voice speaking in a soft, regular cadence, in order to remind your brain that you are safe.”, said another user.
