Everyone has the right to set boundaries, and respecting those boundaries is essential for healthy relationships. But sometimes, when it comes to one’s own kids, people might lose their sense of rationality for a while. The Original Poster (OP) took to the forum, and asked “Am I wrong for causing family drama over a swimming pool?”
BACKSTORY
OP is in her 30s and she lives with her partner and her two kids (7 and 3).
THE HOUSE WITH A POOL
OP’s older sister, Ava, and her husband recently purchased an amazing house in their locality. The house has a stunning swimming pool as well.
THE BARBECUE
Ava recently hosted a barbecue at their place. It was not a very big event. She invited OP, their parents, and the other siblings.
She also mentioned in the invite that she would let the kids play in the pool.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
At the party, OP was getting her youngest kid ready for the pool. She changed him into a swim diaper as he is not yet potty-trained.
WHAT DID AVA DO?
After noticing this, Ava pulled OP aside and told her that it wouldn’t be hygienic to let OP’s kid in the pool, considering he is not yet potty-trained and swim diapers don’t hold pee.
OP FELT IT WAS UNFAIR
OP felt it was unfair to her child and got defensive.
She told Ava that everyone pees in public pools all the time and that it isn’t a big deal.
DID AVA AGREE?
Ava was not ready to listen to OP and clearly stated that kids who aren’t potty trained weren’t allowed inside the pool as it would be unfair to the other kids.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
OP’s son started crying because he wanted to swim in the pool with the other kids.
OP accused Ava of being cold, and in return, Ava accused OP of trying to guilt trip her.
IT’S NOT A BIG DEAL
OP got really upset and told her parents and other siblings about what Ava did.
Everyone asked OP to let this go and to not make a big deal out of it.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
OP felt like nobody supported her and so she left the party early along with her family.
The next day Ava texted OP and apologized, to which OP replied that Ava had damaged the relationship with her nephew permanently.
Ava snapped and told her that she was being dramatic. Ava went and showed these texts to everyone and OP felt like everyone was supporting Ava.
WHAT DO PEOPLE THINK?
“First and foremost, it’s not your pool. It’s Ava’s. And It’s totally reasonable for her to not want your kid’s piss in it.”, said one user.
“I agree that OP is the jerk, but I don’t think Ava is completely guilt-free.
YOU SHOULD HAVE INFORMED
“She’s inviting people to her pool and of course, kids are going to want to play in it, she should have warned OP beforehand that her kid wasn’t allowed in the pool.
This is a totally reasonable request since the kid isn’t potty trained, but it’s a bit mean to invite kids over for a pool party and wait to tell them they’re not allowed in the pool.
Then maybe OP could have brought a little mini plastic pool from the dollar store and played with her kid separately from Ava’s pool. Everyone could have been a little nicer.”, said another user.
