A user asked the forum, Am I a Jerk for searching my husband’s pants without asking him first?
BACK STORY
The original poster’s husband ( OP ) used to be unemployed for a year; he recently started a job at a warehouse.
The previous day, while OP was about to do the laundry, she grabbed his work pants and dug her hand in their pockets to empty them before putting them in the washing machine like she always does.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
OP’s husband just happened to walk by, and when he saw OP searching his pants pockets, He rushed in, yelling at OP to put his pants down.
She already had a folded piece of paper out, but he snatched it and then started screaming at her that she had no respect for his privacy and that she shouldn’t be getting her hands on his things. OP was genuinely dumbfounded and she told him to take it easy as she always does this before laundry.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT
OP’s husband lashed out, saying that OP had no rights and she should’ve come to him and asked him first because he was worried about important documents getting lost, like the one she pulled out.
WHAT DID OP SAY
OP said that the important documents shouldn’t be inside his pockets, and also she asked to see the paper, but he said he wouldn’t show her. He asked why he couldn’t show, and he said that OP didn’t get to ask him anything after she disrespected his privacy.
OP WAS CONFUSED
OP almost laughed, wondering what privacy he does have in his pockets. She also says that he behaved like a stranger was digging into them.
OP’s husband refused to speak to her and later brought a new closet with A LOCK and moved his clothes inside of it.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT
OP asked if he was serious, and he said this would teach her to respect his privacy and deter her snooping. Then he went back without speaking to OP.
OP was confused and asked if she was a jerk.
HE IS HIDING SOMETHING
“He’s obviously hiding something. No sane person with nothing to hide locks up their clothes. It’s completely normal to go through pockets when doing the laundry, either to take out forgotten cash or receipts.
I’m willing to bet there was a phone number on that piece of paper.”
LET HIM WASH HIS CLOTHES
“No, op shouldn’t touch his clothes if he wants privacy; he can wash his own clothes. He asks why his clothes aren’t washed, and she tells him she didn’t want to disrespect his privacy.”
IT IS WEIRD
“For sure, this is completely weird. Everyone that does laundry checks pockets before putting it in the washer if they’re good at laundry.
My husband appreciates and expects me to check his pockets because too many tubes of chapstick have been washed. Even if I forget to check to go in, I stick my hands in pockets while folding just to smooth out the clothes.”
