When a wife buys a new car without consulting her husband, it can be a cause for tension and conflict. The internet is divided on this front. A user asks, Am I wrong? My wife bought a new car without consulting me. We want to hear from you.

The Original Poster’s (OP) wife inherited $100,000, and before the check had even cleared, she had picked out a $38,000 car to buy. Then purchased it today, and the second the check cleared.

What Does OP Feel?

OP says, “It’s her money, and in the end, she can do what she wants. She’s made it clear that it is her money.” However, OP asks if he is wrong to be mad and consider divorce because she left him totally in the dark about it. He adds that she didn’t even consider asking what he thought or letting him look around with her.

OP also says, “It also seems incredibly stupid and short-sighted to me to have blown a third of her inheritance on a new car when we have two perfectly fine and working vehicles already.”

Money Could Have Done A Lot Else

In his opinion, the money could have done a lot else for their family, even made even more money, and instead, it lost a lot of its value the second she drove it off the lot.
He wants to know if he is wrong and a jerk. This is what others say:

“It sounds like you’re angry about the fact that she considers it her money and not family money. The fact that you’re already jumping to divorce over this tells me that there are a lot of other issues going on here. You are the jerk.”

“One thing to consider is inheritances don’t typically clear immediately; usually, there are weeks, if not months/years, before the recipients can see a cent. Chances are he tried to manipulate her into doing what he wanted (hence blaming her for not communicating with him); there could have been multiple conversations on how HE wanted to spend her money vs. her saying what she was going to spend the money on.”

This Should Have Been Discussed

“A married couple should be discussing large purchases like a new car. Not wrong.

Edit- also, a car, in particular, is a large item that needs to be parked somewhere and has a lot of ongoing costs (gas, maintenance, insurance, etc.). While all large purchases should be discussed when you’re married, that goes doubly for something with a more significant impact/logistical concerns.”

It Is Expected To Be Discussed

“Yeah, all these you are wrong comments are bonkers to me. I will likely inherit a lot of money someday, and I can’t fathom not discussing and forming a plan of what to do with my husband. In my mind– I’m well aware of the community property laws in my state– it’s not MY money, it’s OURS and I want to spend it making our future better and enjoying it together. It’s not like I earned it…

OP is not wrong and I’d be utterly shocked, hurt, and mad as hell if my husband did this.”

“What caught my eye (I’m a woman) is him pointing out she didn’t ask his advice or get him to look around with him. I think OP thinks he could’ve done a better job; he is a tad misogynist, IMO. Also, I’ve had my dream car picked out since I was a teen.. no, not my wedding dress, my car.. 1964.5 red Mustang convertible.. sometimes a woman knows what she wants. I also get a whiff of jealousy from OP. In my partnership, if I’m paying for the car from MY money and it doesn’t impact my ability to pay our bills, I decide.. love my turbo!

Also, OP is wrong!”
