In a workplace, it is common to have friends and communities to make it fun but making friends at work has its pros and cons. Different people have different opinions about making friends at work.
A user asked the forum, “What’s your opinion on making friends at work?”
Here are the common responses.
THEY MAY BE WOLVES IN SHEEP’S CLOTHING
“Be careful. Sometimes work friends can be amazing; sometimes they are wolves in sheep’s clothing.”
DON’T FORCE IT
“Don’t force it. It has to happen organically because you’re all there drawing a paycheck, and money distorts true feelings in strange ways.”
DON’T SHARE TOO MUCH
“It’s important, especially if you spend a lot of time there, but be careful about sharing too much because people can be backstabbed out here. Keep it light and fun.”
I FEEL COMFORTABLE AND HAPPY
“A lot of people have lousy work-friend experiences, but I thoroughly enjoy the company of my coworkers.
We’re mostly just friends in the workplace and don’t do much outside of that. But still, when I’m at work, it’s fun! I like all my coworkers and feel comfortable and happy when I’m vibing with them.”
THE THREE RULES
“The three rules about work are:
1) Never trust the boss or manager.
2) Never care about it. Employees are considered disposable.
3) Never make ‘friends’ at work; they’ll throw you under the bus in a heartbeat.”
IT CAN BE DRAINING
“It can be good, but if you hang out with them at work and off work, it can get a little draining; we all need a break from each other now and then; it depends on position too, like superior/subordinate as well but that one’s more about maintaining proper boundaries.”
DON’T GET ATTACHED
“Be friendly, but don’t get attached. If it serves them, they will leave or throw you under the bus.”
IT IS NOT WORTH IT
“I’d say a no. Things could go wrong really quickly or things could get awkward. If they aren’t like a friend you have who is out of work, to where you feel completely comfortable, do it.
But if you have second thoughts or even ask questions like this, you probably have a thought in the back of your mind telling you it’s not a good idea.
They can be chill or cool, but trust me, it’s not worth it. I’ve had cool and chill friends, but it’s not worth it. Unless you’re 100% sure you’d be their friend if you didn’t work together, tread cautiously.”
WORK ISN’T A SOCIAL CLUB
“If it happens, then great. But work isn’t a social club, and I’m there to do a job and go home.”
THEY SHOULDN’T DISTRACT
“I don’t mind talking to people on a break.
But if I’m working, I’m working. People trying to socialize while I do my job is a distraction, not a help.”
I HAVE BEST AND WORST FRIENDS FROM WORK
“Both my best and worst friends come from work.”
IT WON’T LAST LONG
“Work friends are never there when you need them. Enough said. I’ve made, on occasion, ‘good’ friends from workplaces over the years, where we exchange phone numbers like we call and talk to each other maybe twice a year and kinda catch up, even years after we no longer work there.
But, at the same time, it’s not like these people will drop everything for you when it gets real.
Also, they eventually stop calling or answering, or you can tell the conversations start to lose their energy, and they lose interest. Finally, I will delete their number, or I’m sure they will delete mine.”
TRUST ISSUES
“I don’t trust people.”
DON’T BE SHY
“Get to know each other immediately, and don’t be shy.”
KEEPING MY WORK AND PERSONAL LIFE SEPARATE
“I like to keep my work and personal life separate.”
