Being an only child in the house is very different from growing up with siblings. Such children, when they grow up, find it difficult to adapt to people.
A user asked the forum, “What is a dead giveaway that someone is an only child?”. Here are the top responses.
THEY GO ALONE OUT
“They go off on their own a lot. You do what you want to do. I’ll do what I want to do, and we’ll meet up when that’s the same thing.”
FRUSTRATED WHEN THEY DON’T FIND THINGS IN THE SAME PLACE
“My boyfriend is an only child. He gets super frustrated when something isn’t in the spot he left it. Like if I used the remote or a charger, he gets flustered cos living at home; he always knew where his things were, LOL.
Meanwhile, my things would SOMEHOW end up in my sister’s room.”
DIFFICULT TO STAY WITH ROOMMATES
“It was extremely difficult for me to get used to having a roommate when I went to college. I hated not having my own space. Still do. I need alone time like I need oxygen.”
THEY DON’T NEED ANYONE
“I’d say, being able to entertain themselves for days at a time without needing someone else to join in.”
DON’T LIKE NOISY ENVIRONMENT
“Typically, they don’t like noisy households. Mine was always loud as we had six kids plus all our friends at my house. Only children would find that too chaotic.”
INTRICATE CONVERSATION
“Conversations and language are usually more intricate as children since most discussions are with parent(s).”
EATING SLOW
“I’m an only child. The only giveaway I can think of is I eat extremely slowly because I never had siblings to hurry me up or steal my food, but I also had parents that were never around, so others might not have that issue.”
FEELING CLOSER TO OTHERS
“Tbh, there are a lot of sad parts to being an only child, which are a giveaway. We always feel closer to others than they do to us because we’re missing one degree of social connection that others have. For example, my friend may be “like a sister” to me, but she has sisters, so for her I’m always just “a good friend.” Friendships are more precious to us.
Secondly, people seem to think only children are spoiled, and sure we are but that’s from the superficial view of people with siblings with whom they had to share toys, etc. Only children are responsible for everything as their parents get older, with no relief.
Sure, I didn’t have to share my Gameboy with anyone. But there isn’t anyone around to help me take care of my parents as they’re reaching old age.”
“Never ask for help because there was never anyone to ask.”
TALKING TO THEMSELVES
“Talking to yourself- yes, I know everyone does it- but it’s on a much greater scale.”
VALUING FRIENDSHIP
“Valuing friendship more than those with siblings has to be the answer!”
FREEDOM TO EAT
“They eat food out of the fridge without checking whose food it is.”
WELL-MANNERED
“In my experience, only children are more articulate, communicative, and well-mannered because they grew up with adults and were talked to as such.
Also, then there’s the rest of us that grew up with siblings in a Lord of the Flies government.”
“They don’t talk much.”
INDEPENDENT
“That they’re independent, not shy, and can easily communicate with adults and older people.”
GETTING UPSET EASILY
“Dated an only child and coming from a big family, this is what I noticed: – getting upset when friends cut her off in a conversation. For me, if you didn’t speak out at that moment, you’d never talk.
Related to the above, she talked slower when telling stories because she never had competition from others seeking attention or from people trying to tell their own story
- Eating slowly; from a big family, you had to eat quickly, especially if you wanted seconds
- Sharing was not her strong suit. Shed let food expire if it meant no one else has her stuff.”
“Every only child I’ve ever met (myself included) is into hobbies that they can do by themselves – gaming, reading, art, writing, etc.”
RESERVED AND SHY
“Reserved and shy. They tend to try to stay away from attention. They also don’t often dress like people of their age/community. Sometimes they have a lot of social anxiety. Also, this is just my opinion on only children who are girls. Not guys.”
