To live a successful life in this competitive world, we need multiple skills to shine.  A user asked the forum, “What’s an important life skill you think not enough people have?”

Here are the common responses.

EMOTIONAL REGULATION

“Emotional regulation. 90% of disputes that police are called to could have been solved by either party having basic coping skills that meant they didn’t escalate things to screaming or violence.”

USING GOOGLE

“Using Google. Seriously. Too many people still do not know how to find information.”

FINANCIAL LITERACY

“Financial Literacy. I know many people who live beyond their means or spend every paycheck each month and then wonder why they can’t afford to repair their car.”

ABILITY TO COMPROMISE

“The ability to compromise, if they don’t like it, it’s just wrong and needs to disappear.”

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

“An important life skill that not enough people have is effective communication. It’s the cornerstone of understanding, empathy, and resolving conflicts, yet it’s often overlooked. Mastering the art of clear, respectful, and empathetic communication can significantly enhance personal and professional relationships, leading to more fulfilling and harmonious interactions.”

SELF-AWARENESS

“Self-awareness. It is important for everyone but essential for managers/company owners. I’ve had one boss who was a very self-aware person. The rest were some degree of oblivious/aloof to the impact of their words and actions.”

LEARNING TO SAY NO

“How to say ‘no’ when people ask them for favors they don’t want to do.”

SWIMMING

“Swimming. Most people can paddle and move in the water, but too many can only manage that in a pool. Not saying we all have to be champion swimmers or that it’d help in a massive sea storm, but everyone should be able to swim in a standard current just in case.”

ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND PEOPLE’S INTENTIONS

“Discerning whether someone is a good friend or simply using you only for convenience.”

EMPATHY

“Empathy (more a quality but still), as others said, common sense. Just think about how others are feeling/thinking while you’re out and about.”

BASIC LIFE SKILLS

“Very basic life skills; you will be surprised to know how many people don’t know how to cook on their own, change their car tires, start a fire with rocks, find directions with the sun, and many more such skills that can save one in dire situations.”

SOCIAL SKILLS

“Social skills. So many younger generations will have no idea how to interact face-to-face.”

SPATIAL AWARENESS

“When I was younger, my Physical Education teacher would always stress about ‘spatial awareness’ in a way that I thought was silly because surely keeping track of the people and objects in one immediate vicinity and being able to react appropriately to any actions taken by said people and objects is just something everyone does automatically, without even having to think about it.

Now, as an adult, I feel the urge to shout ‘Spatial awareness!’ at least 12 people per day. Triple that if I drive or cycle somewhere. People who get through life without looking at where you are going, how do you do it? I’m perplexed as to how you even managed to reach adulthood.”

READING

“Reading. Just plain and simple reading.”

PRAGMATISM

“Pragmatism. More of a trait than a skill, but how we think about things affects our entire life.”
