Confectioneries that close at a specific time should politely decline orders rather than being rude to customers, lest they damage their reputation.
A user asked the forum, “Am I a jerk for ordering after the staff told me they are still serving?”. Read the complete story to know who is wrong here.
BACKSTORY
The Original Poster (OP) and his girlfriend were out for a walk. On their way back home, they passed by a famous confectionery that was still open.
He says that people were getting ice creams and cakes, and some were even sitting outside.
He also added that normally, the place closes at 21:30, and it was around 21:40, so they weren’t sure if they would still sell them anything.
THEY INQUIRED
They wanted to ask the staff if it was okay to buy something; he said that they didn’t even want to sit. In a polite manner, they asked, “Good evening. Are you still open? Can we order, especially for takeaway?”
HOW DID THE STAFF RESPOND?
The staff responded, “Just tell me what you want?”
He says that he ordered a small cake and an ice cream.
THAT WEIRD LOOKS
As they were about to pay, they double-checked with them if this was okay, as they were looking at them weirdly.
WHAT DID THE CASHIER DO?
He says the cashier didn’t respond and showed the POS to pay.
THE HARSH STAFF
They took their order and sat down. While they were about to eat, he heard one of the staff members, who was leaving their shift (not wearing their uniform), looking at them and muttering about why people keep coming and why they’re still sitting with other coworkers.
WHAT WAS OP’S REPLY?
He said as politely as he could, he said, “We did ask; why didn’t you say you are closing? We wouldn’t have ordered that in that case.”
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
The staff then called them entitled jerks and left.
He says that comment was quite funny since his girlfriend had worked as a server before.
OP’S UPDATE
OP updated that after they asked for takeout, they did not respond; they gave them a plate for the cake and a cup for ice cream. They didn’t give them a takeout order, and they served the cake on a plate and the ice cream in a mug/cup.
OP wants to know if he is a jerk.
THEY MUST BE CLEAR
“I’ve worked in restaurants for a while, and I have an unpopular opinion on this: Not a jerk. Places should close when they close and be clear about it; it shouldn’t be something customers have to divine for themselves.
It’s not difficult to stop taking orders at some point prior to when you expect everyone to be done eating and out of there.”
IT IS NOT YOUR JOB TO POLICE THEIR WORKING HOURS
“It’s not your job to police their hours.
It’s on them to decline. It’s as simple as saying, ‘Sorry the kitchen is closed for the evening; we stop taking orders at —’ ”
