Staying hydrated and eating enough food is important when attending a wedding, especially on a hot day. She did not do this and fainted.
A user asked the forum, “Am I a jerk for fainting at my aunt’s wedding and ruining it?”. Read the complete story to know who is wrong here.
The Original Poster, OP (21F) attended her aunt’s wedding a few weeks ago. She was not part of the wedding, just a guest, which she was fine with.
Before the wedding, everyone was advised to drink lots of water and eat beforehand because it would be extremely hot that day.
WHAT’S THE ISSUE?
The wedding started at 5:00 pm, and she had nothing to eat or drink until then except maybe a granola bar because she was extremely busy that day.
HOW DID OP FEEL?
So when it was time for the wedding, she was already tired and hungry. About thirty minutes into the wedding (at a church), she felt uneasy and lightheaded, so she excused herself to go to the washroom.
WHAT HAPPENED TO OP?
As she was walking, she felt like she was about to collapse. The next thing she can remember was coming to and seeing lots of people surrounding her, including the bride and groom.
WHAT’S THE REAL TRAGEDY?
Apparently, when she fainted, she fell onto the photographer crouched beside her. Not only that, but he dropped the camera lens down, and it broke.
WHAT WAS OP’S EXPLANATION?
She says that she doesn’t even remember seeing the photographer, but she may have been too dizzy or something to have seen him.
WHAT’S THE SITUATION?
She also added that the wedding was a cheaper one, so the photographer was a family friend of the groom who only had one camera with him.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
The bride was just in tears that she wouldn’t have any good pictures from her wedding. The photographer insisted he could drive home and grab a different one, but it would take too long.
HOW DID OP FEEL?
OP added that the bride was indeed mad at her, but she felt it was a bit harsh as it was embarrassing for her already.
WHAT’S OP’S FINAL THOUGHTS?
She also says that fainting never even crossed her mind as something that would happen at all. In the end, they got pictures but were on cell phones.
OP asks if she is a jerk.
YOU ARE NOT CONCERNED ABOUT IT
“I mean, kinda a jerk, sorry – you didn’t mean to faint; that wasn’t in your control, but by your admission, you didn’t eat or drink all day even though you knew it was going to be very hot and you’d been advised to take precautions.
You don’t feel particularly bad about breaking the photographer’s camera lens when you fell because it was a “cheaper” wedding? It’s a soft jerk since none of this was intentional, but it sounds like you were negligent and not particularly concerned about the consequences for other people.”
YOU IGNORED THEIR ADVICE
“You were warned that you should eat and drink before the wedding. Why? Because things like fainting and heat exhaustion are real. You ignored the advice. You fainted as a result. You could’ve gotten a pass without falling on the photographer, but you did.
Because of your choices, the bride does not have the wedding photographs she wanted. She has every right to be really angry at you as your actions led to that consequence. It doesn’t matter that you didn’t intend for it to happen. What matters is that you ignored their advice, and the bride suffered as a result.”
YOU MUST APOLOGIZE
“Not for the fainting, that cannot be controlled, but for not drinking and eating despite being advised to – that CAN be controlled. You are not a little kid; I don’t care how busy you were – unless you were running from an erupting volcano, you should have stopped to eat and drink, especially on a hot day.
This time, you ruined a wedding. Next time, depending on the place, you might endanger your and someone else’s life. Suddenly, losing consciousness is not a joke.
Apologize, and don’t do that again.”
