BACKSTORY

Over Thanksgiving last year, the original poster, OP (26F) was invited by a friend (25F) to a Thanksgiving party at one of her friends’ houses (30M).

She had never met him and didn’t know much about him other than he was a server at a local restaurant.

OP says that it was not Thanksgiving Dinner, just a get together the day before.

HER HABIT

She was raised to bring something with her when going to someone’s house for a gathering, so she bought a nice-ish ($25) bottle of wine with her.

HOW DID PEOPLE REACT?

When she got there, multiple people approached her and asked me why she would bring such cheap wine when the parents of the host owned a vineyard.

SHE HAD NO CLUE

OP had no clue they owned a vineyard, her friend hadn’t mentioned it. Even the host told her it was silly of her to bring it.

WHAT DID HER FRIEND SAY?

OP said that her friend told her that the wine would probably sit on a shelf for ten years and then be thrown out if it wasn’t thrown out the next day.

That no one in that house would ever consider drinking it.

HER FRIEND DIDN’T TELL HER

OP says that she has no clue why she didn’t tell her this when she picked her up at home. She was holding a bottle of wine.

She put the bottle on the table with the drinks, and no one opened it all night.

At the end of the evening, when they were leaving, she grabbed the bottle and took it with her.OP says that she knew this would be considered rude at a regular party, and she would have never dreamed of taking it with her.

OP’S JUSTIFICATION FOR HER BEHAVIOUR

She says that because multiple people had given her a headache, including the host, about how she should have known better and made her feel incredibly embarrassed for even bringing wine, she decided to not let it go to waste as for her a $25 bottle is quite expensive.

WHAT DID HER FRIEND SAY?

Her friend recently told her that she was going to a party, and if she invited her, she had to promise not to embarrass her by “bringing cheap wine and then taking it home at the end”.

OP says that her friend told her that it was a bad move and even if she knew no one should drink it she should have left it.

OP’S PERSPECTIVE

OP says that she can see both sides. Like she said, she never would have taken it home at really any other party. Multiple people told her the wine would never be opened, and she was silly to bring it. So she took it home.

OP asks if she is a jerk.

IT WAS RUDE

“Not a jerk, but everyone criticizing you for bringing it were. Calling it cheap was rude, and your ‘friend’ and her comment about the party was really quite rude.

If I bought a gift and everyone just made fun of me for bringing it, I certainly would have taken it back.”
