Sometimes people need to be a little harsh to their kids to teach them a lesson.
Even though it’s temporarily hurtful, it is always for the greater good.
The Original Poster (OP) took it to the forum, and asked “Am I wrong for throwing out my son’s go-kart after he hit his sister with it?”. We want to know from you.
BACKSTORY
OP and her husband have a total of 4 kids. They have two daughters (8 and 16), and two sons (10 and 14).
CHRISTMAS
OP and her husband got their kid’s electric scooters and a go-kart as Christmas presents. Electric scooters were for their younger ones, and the go-kart was for their 14 year old son.
THE CONDITIONS
OP and her husband told their kids that they need to be careful of pedestrians and other riders and that if they hit someone/something, their scooters/go-kart would be taken away, and if they broke anything, they would have to work to pay back what they broke.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
OP recently took her kids to the park to ride their scooters and go-kart. Her elder son challenged the younger two to a race.
THE ACCIDENT
OP’s eldest daughter had to walk all across the park to get some water and while she was halfway there, the elder son hit her with his go-kart.
THE INJURIES AND DAMAGES
She suffered serious injuries and broke a total of 8 bones in her leg and also got a concussion. She also suffered a head injury. Her phone and watch were also broken.
THE PUNISHMENT
Once they returned from the hospital, OP listed her son’s go-kart for sale and informed him that he needed to get a job to pay for his sister’s new phone and watch.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
OP’s son said that it was unfair of her to sell his go-kart. He also defended himself by saying that she was supposed to know that something like this could happen while buying it for him.
He then blamed it on his sister for not paying attention while walking.
HUSBAND’S REACTION
Her husband also told her that she was being a little too hard on their kid and asked her to reduce his punishment.
WHAT DO PEOPLE THINK?
“At first, I thought it’s a bit too much, but given the serious injuries, it’s a warning shot that these things have consequences. If this happens with a car, he might end up in jail for a decade.
At this point I don’t see it as a punishment, but rather trying to avoid worse in the future for him”, said one user.
“If he hit her hard enough to break 8 bones, he could have killed her. He has proven that he’s too young to have good judgment and your husband isn’t helping matters here”, said another user.
