A user asked, Am I wrong for Venmo requesting my sister-in-law (SIL) for the hours I had to miss at work?
Backstory
What Does SIL Usually Do
SIL picks my son up from school and brings him to her house to hang out/do homework until OP can pick him up. On Wednesday she called OP while OP was already at work to tell she that she and her husband got last-minute concert tickets so she wouldn’t be able to pick him up from school.
What Does OP Say
OP was irritated, and says, “It would be one thing if I knew in advance and could make other arrangements, but she just sprung it on me.”
What Did OP Do
OP asked her to reconsider and reminded her that she made this commitment and it would be awful to break it. She still went to the concert. OP had to leave work 6 hours early and lost out on all those hours.
OP figured since she put her in this spot, she should have to recoup her because her income is the only thing she and her son survive on.
OP Decided To Venmo Her
OP says, “I sent her a Venmo request for the amount I lost out on. I got a nasty text from her a few minutes later about how she is not paying it. I had to send my son home with one of his friends yesterday and today because she won’t pick him up.
I told some of my friends, and they are 50/50 on if I should have done it, but I need that income and he made a commitment to me and my son, I think that is more important then going to a concert to get drunk.”
Your SIL Is Doing This For Free
“This is amazingly stupid. Your SIL is babysitting for FREE, and you want to charge her money when she cannot babysit for free ?!
You are a jerk. Your SIL is not your personal slave. Your kid is YOUR problem, but you sure seem to have dumped so much parental responsibility on your SIL that you somehow think now that she is a parent, and she owes you money to take care of your own kid ? That’s not how it works.”
She Is Allowed To Have A Life
“You are a jerk – you need a plan b ALWAYS. She’s allowed to have a life outside of helping you out.”
You Have Some Audacity
“You are a jerk – what was your goal here? To have them never watch your child again? Honestly the audacity to do that to someone who is doing you a favor”
What If It Was A True Emergency
“You are wrong for the Venmo request, and for not having a backup plan.
Yes, it was a last-minute chance to go to a concert, and I understand that you don’t see this as more important than watching your child so you can work. Losing several hours of pay is a hardship, so I understand your frustration. But your SIL has been providing FREE childcare, including picking up your son from school, and probably providing snacks and meals. Asking her to reimburse you for your lost wages when she has been helping you for free for a long time is a slap in her face.
What if it were a true emergency? What would you have done then? It’s your responsibility to make certain you have back-up plans for childcare for your son. It sounds like you cost yourself free childcare for your son. I think you owe your SIL a sincere apology.”
