Being in a relationship means being partners, not owners. It’s about respecting each other’s individuality and giving each other the space to be themselves.
The Original Poster (OP) took it to the forum, and asked “Am I wrong for waking up extra early on my vacation to get some me-time?”
BACKSTORY
OP feels like there is one particular issue that is driving them apart, even though everything else seems fine. OP likes to play games, and he knows that it isn’t something his girlfriend likes.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
OP and his girlfriend were enjoying their trip to Portugal. They were doing loads of fun stuff throughout the day, like – sunbathing, boat trips, etc.
WHAT DID OP DO TO MAKE HER FEEL GOOD?
OP understands that his girlfriend doesn’t like to see him gazing at a small screen all the time. That is why throughout the trip, OP always used to give his phone to his girlfriend so that he could be fully present in the moment with her.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
One day OP and his girlfriend came back from a boat trip and planned to go grab some dinner. OP’s girlfriend wanted to take a quick shower before going out for dinner.
WHAT DID OP DO?
As his girlfriend was taking a shower, OP decided to play a game because he would have to wait for his girlfriend anyway.
DID SHE LIKE IT?
OP’s girlfriend came out of the shower and saw him playing. It was very evident from her face that she did not like it. But she did not say anything about it.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
OP quickly completed his game and got dressed. Then they both went out for dinner, returned to the hotel, and went to sleep.
OP WOKE UP EARLY
Next morning OP woke up early and decided to make himself some coffee and play the game on mute as his girlfriend was sleeping in the other room.
SHE STARTED CRYING
After some time, OP’s girlfriend woke up and saw him playing. She got super upset and started crying. She asked “How is it possible that you use every little timeframe you get to play on that thing instead of doing something with me?“
OP now wants to know if he is a jerk for getting up early on their vacation to do what he likes to do and get some me-time.
WHAT DO PEOPLE THINK?
“There’s absolutely nothing wrong with what you’re doing. It’s quite literally the same as watching TV or reading a book. She was sleeping or in the shower. What are you supposed to do? Sit there in the corner staring at the wall with your hands folded waiting for her next command?”, said one user.
THIS ISN’T HEALTHY
“On the other hand, if she takes his phone to be sure all attention is on her at all times, it is not healthy.”, said another user.
