Every relationship requires the fundamental elements of making minor changes and offering mutual support.
The Original Poster (OP) took it to the forum, and asked, “Am I wrong for not giving my girlfriend my dinner after I had already bought her dinner?”. We want to hear from you.
BACKSTORY
OP and his girlfriend live in NYC. He is 29 and earns more than his girlfriend, who is 25. Her girlfriend recently broke her leg and their place has no elevator.
SURPRISE BAGS
There’s a popular app that delivers leftover food at a reduced price to avoid food wastage. They call it “surprise bags,” and the customers don’t usually know what they’re getting until they pick their food up.
OP’S ORDER
OP ordered a surprise bag from a barbecue place and was on his way to pick it up. He also asked his girlfriend if she wanted to order as well, and she declined saying she wasn’t in the mood for a barbecue.
WHAT DID SHE DO?
There was an Indian restaurant right next door, so OP’s girlfriend ordered a surprise bag. OP picked up his girlfriend’s order as well on his way back home.
THE FOOD
When OP opened his takeaway, it was absolutely a hit. He got burnt ends, ribs, pulled pork, baked beans, potato salad, bread, onions, and pickles, all for just $12.
When his girlfriend opened her takeaway, it was a little disappointing as her surprise bag only had 6 different types of soup, half of them being variations on cauliflower soup.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
OP’s girlfriend asked him if he could share his food with her as she didn’t want to have her soup.
OP SAID NO
OP said no because he was hungry and he wanted to have his food all by himself. He also said “I offered to buy you some already and you said no, so I’m going to devour it”.
OP’S OFFER
OP gave her two offers. He asked her to order something from the delivery app, and she declined because her financial situation was not so good. He then offered to walk her up to the bodega and buy her something, and she declined again as she broke her leg recently.
SHE GOT ANGRY
She got angry at OP and called him insensitive for not sharing his food with her.
Now OP wants to know if this is wrong.
WHAT DO PEOPLE THINK?
“Come on man. You both did the surprise bags, hers didn’t work out. You know she can’t afford to order something else but didn’t offer to help pay, you offered her crappy bodega food instead. You could have at least split the barbecue and ordered something else to share and split the price.
If the situations were reversed and you’d gotten a bunch of soup while she had a feast, would you really want to sit there hungry waiting for some alternative while she chowed down?”, said one user.
She Is Recovering
“She is recovering from a broken foot in a 4 storey apartment with no elevator! My spouse often buys new food to try out and we share. It’s a diversification strategy in case one of us doesn’t like the food.
Even if I bought something and changed my mind, I don’t think my spouse would ever actually deny me some of his. And if I bought something delicious, I would love it if he tried some just so I could make him smile.”, said another user.
