Straight People are uninformed about the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, And Queer) community and their lifestyle.
A user asked the forum, “Straight people, what burning questions do you have about the LGBTQ community?” Here are the top questions.
HOW DO I SUPPORT?
“My 15-year-old daughter came out to us a month ago. How do I best support her as her dad, knowing that her life will have additional challenges that I’m not experienced in?
Many of my best friends throughout my life are LGBTQ, and I’d hoped that I had been (and still am) a supportive and loving friend but wasn’t necessarily in the role to be their shoulder to lean on or a mentor.
With my daughter, I want to be her rock. I want to be able to comfort her that I will do anything to help if things are tough. It may be the same as being a supporting father in any child’s upbringing. However, I know she’ll have more challenges.
Am I overthinking this? I want to be the best dad for her.”
ARE THINGS GETTING BETTER?
“Do you feel like it’s genuinely getting better or heading in the right direction regarding equality, and is it just being considered as ‘normal’ or regular as any other relationship or lifestyle?”
COMPLIMENTING A GUY
“Do you ever feel nervous when you compliment a guy’s looks or flirt with them because you think they might be straight and get super angry?”
IS IT POSSIBLE NOT TO BE ATTRACTED TO ANYONE?
“I am not straight, but I don’t know what I am. How do I figure this out? Is it possible not to be attracted to anyone?”
ARE YOU ANNOYED?
“Are you annoyed when people ask you a lot of questions? Or any at all?”
LOTS OF MIXED FEELINGS
“How did you figure out that you weren’t straight? Cause I’ve been having a lot of mixed feelings of my own, and I’m not sure how to feel ( I’m a guy).”
SECRET MEETINGS
“Where do they have their secret meetings, and what food do they eat?”
WHO DECIDES?
“Who decides what goes into LGBTQ and what doesn’t? Who decides in the order of, don’t know what to call them identities?”
HOW DO YOU DIFFERENTIATE?
“For lesbian women (I don’t know if that’s the correct term, sorry), how do you know you’re romantically attracted to women versus just interested in being friends?
Whenever I see a woman attractive, I honestly can’t tell if I’m romantically attracted to her or want to be like her.”
BISEXUAL-PHOBIA IN THE COMMUNITY
“Why is there so much Bisexual-Phobia in the community? Genuinely wonder because I consider myself Bisexual.”
HOW TO TRANSLATE NEO PRONOUNS?
“Have you ever wondered how to translate neo pronouns/they/them into gendered languages like German, etc? My mind always gets a blue screen while thinking about this.”
COMPANIES CHANGING LOGOS
“What do you think about pride and the moment when every company changes their logo to a rainbow?”
CAN STRAIGHT PEOPLE ATTEND PRIDE?
“My wife didn’t accept herself as bisexual until after we were together. We are monogamous. I will do my best to support her.
She wants to be part of the community and participate in things like Pridefest, but she feels uncomfortable. I’ve offered to either go with her or let her go alone. She doesn’t want to go alone but also doesn’t want to be seen as straight, either.
I think it’s fantastic who she is and enjoy her not feeling left out, and I also think it’s important that she helps represent her identity to help combat bisexual erasure. Are people judgy about things like this? Can I go with her? What can we do to make her more comfortable?”
DIFFICULTIES COMING OUT OF THE CLOSET
“Is it difficult coming out of the closet? Like, for very religious families?”
THE BEST TERM TO IDENTIFY THEM
“Out of habit and respect, I tend to say yes sir or yes, ma’am. Is there another term for those who identify as they/them?”
IS IT OFFENSIVE TO MENTION CHANGE?
“My younger brother is trans and recently started taking hormones. Is it offensive to mention that his voice sounds better/more manly?
Or to generally call attention to the fact that the trans person in question is passing better now?”
