BACKSTORY
The Original Poster’s (OP’s) (23F) roommate Rose (24F) meal preps for her entire week of lunches and dinners.
OP says that Rose always waits till late Sunday night to do all the cooking, so often she leaves the containers to cool on the counter overnight because it is too hot to put in the fridge right away before she goes to bed.
OP MOVED HER CATS TO THE APARTMENT
Two months ago, OP moved her two cats into the apartment; now, in her household, she doesn’t allow them on the counters, but if there is food left open, they will try to get into it.
THE WARNING
She explained to Rose that she should be aware that the cats might try to eat her food or might knock it over if she leaves it out all night, but she brushed her off saying it was fine.
OP told her that it was only a matter of time before it happened.
THE MESS
OP woke Monday morning to the kitchen in a mess because the cats had knocked over several containers onto the floor.
She cleaned up and put the rest of the food that still looked fine into the fridge. She says that overall, out of 7 lunches and 7 dinners, about half were ruined.
WHAT DID OP DO?
When Rose got up, she explained what happened and apologized. Rose flipped out on her because she couldn’t afford to buy more food for the week.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
Rose demanded that she buy more food because it was her animals that caused this, but she also couldn’t afford to buy more meals out of her own food budget.
WHAT WAS OP’S REPLY?
OP says that she told Rose that she wouldn’t be replacing anything because she was being irresponsible with her own food by leaving it out, and she had already warned her that this might happen.
Rose is still furious with OP, and some of her friends have said that she is obligated to replace her food since it was her cats that did the damage.
