It’s obviously sad when things don’t go as planned, but sometimes people need to be a little sensitive and understanding, especially when their family is going through a crisis.
The Original Poster (OP) took it to the forum, and asked “Am I wrong for having my son miss his graduating road trip to watch his sibling?”. We want to know from you.
BACKSTORY
OP and his wife have 3 kids. OP’s eldest son just graduated high school. OP decided to pay for his graduating trip with his friends.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
OP’s wife’s parents got into an accident. Her parents stayed in another state so they needed to drive to another state. OP’s wife was in no condition to drive, so OP had to drive.
COULDN’T FIND A BABYSITTER
As all of these happened so suddenly, they were not able to find a babysitter for their younger daughter.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
They asked their eldest son to look after their daughter because they had no other choice. The eldest son was unhappy about it but still agreed.
WHAT DID OP DO?
Initially, OP told his son to ask his friends if they could postpone the trip by one week. But they couldn’t.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
OP and his wife went to his in-law’s place. Their condition was critical, so the wife decided to stay back. OP returned after a few days and asked his son to join the trip midway since there were still 12 days left for the trip to end.
HOW DID OP’S SON REACT?
OP’s son snapped and said that there was no point in joining the trip midway, as they had already spoiled his trip.
WHAT DID HE SAY TO HIS MOM?
OP’s son even called his mother and called her ‘selfish’. She lost her calm and started shouting. She told OP about this incident as well.
WHAT IS OP’S TAKE ON IT?
OP is totally confused and devastated. He can’t understand how to deal with this situation. He is also wondering why his son doesn’t care about his grandparents almost passing away.
He doesn’t know how to calm his wife down, who has been furious after the conversation with their son. He also has no clue whether he did something wrong by ruining his son’s graduation trip.
WHAT DO PEOPLE THINK?
“I don’t understand why you couldn’t take your kids, it’s their grandparents who were in critical condition after all. And what would have happened if he already left?”, said one user.
LACK OF EMPATHY
“I cut my graduation trip to Europe short because my grandma died and I wanted to support my mom. It never even crossed my mind to be upset about the trip. I can’t believe the lack of empathy here.”, said another user.
