Life in the 90s was a whole different world than today’s fast-paced and technology-driven existence. Despite technological advancements, people from the 90s still fondly remember those times.
A user asked the forum, “For people who grew up in the ‘90s, what are some things you miss about it?”. Here are the top responses!
NOT KNOWING WHAT EVERYONE IS DOING
“Not knowing what everyone else was doing every moment of every day.”
“Optimism about the future.”
NO SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS
“No big social media platforms unless you count forums and chat rooms.”
“Human connection and privacy.”
UNAWARE OF POLITICAL AFFILIATIONS OF NEIGHBOR
“Not knowing the political affiliations of every neighbor and family member.”
ABILITY TO DISCONNECT
“The ability to disconnect and be out of touch. The 90s were great for that.”
LACK OF ANXIETY
“Lack of anxiety from not knowing everything all the time.”
KIDS PLAYING TOGETHER
“Kids would just play together (usually outside) and not be glued to screens.”
NOT HAVING PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE OF EVERYTHING
“Not having photographic evidence of everything. We could do dumb things as teenagers and not get caught. No one would take out a phone and record you.
At concerts, events, and special occasions, you had to be in the moment and just revel in it. We were way more present, and it was okay for kids to be bored or create their fun with their imaginations!”
LACK OF FEAR
“The lack of fear. Our culture still had its concerns, but there was so much confidence, arrogance even, about what the future held. However, since 9/11, everyone has been more fearful.”
“Malls. The nice/new mall near where I grew up closed permanently this year, and it messed me up worse than I would’ve expected; I have so many memories of that place, especially around the holidays, going to Electronics Boutique, Waldenbooks, Radio Shack, Kaybee Toys, the Disney Store, the Dollar Store, the food courts, and the dumb little kiosk. I wish we could have some of that again somehow. It was so much fun.”
MEMORIZING CLOSEST FRIENDS PHONE NUMBER
“Memorizing your closest friends’ phone numbers and calling them in the kitchen asking if they want to come over and play.”
“The simplicity, things seem so stressful and fast now with social media. I miss not being able to talk to everyone at any moment. It made moments feel more special.”
“Renting films – I miss walking into a store and browsing films we would be watching over the weekend! No social media, smartphones, advanced tech, and quality TV shows.”
“The old internet. Also, I miss those cups with the blue swoosh.”
