Strange superstitions are a part of many cultures worldwide, but some are stranger than others. A user asked the forum, “What’s the strangest superstition you’ve ever heard?”
Here are some responses he got!
NOT GOING BACK RULE
“I’m not sure if this has been mentioned, but Russians are adamant about their “not going back” rule. If you forget something at home, my friends were never allowed to return because they believed you would get in a car crash or die in some other way on the return journey.”
GIFTING WALLET WITHOUT SOME MONEY
“When I was young, it was believed to be bad luck to give someone a purse or wallet without putting some money in it, even just a penny.”
BAD LUCK TO GIVE SOMEONE SOMETHING SHARP
“It was also terrible luck to give someone something sharp, like scissors or knives. My mom always followed those rules. She wasn’t superstitious; I think she was just afraid of offending people who were.
FEAR OF NUMBER 13
“I have an extended family member who deliberately goes out of her way to avoid number 13 by any means necessary. It’s pretty dumb. She does so many random tiny adjustments to place settings, objects, food, etc., to thwart the devil.”
SNOW DAY SUPERSTITION
“I’m going to go with the classic. Wearing your pajamas inside out to hope for a snow day. They would even say this over the intercom in my day. “ everyone, be sure to wear your pajamas inside out tonight.”
GRANDMAS BREAD AND BUTTER RULE
“When my grandma and I were walking together, if we had to separate from walking around a pillar or something else when we came back together, we had to say “bread and butter” before saying anything else, or else we’d fight. I still catch myself doing it, and she’s been gone over 20 years.”
MOM KNOCKS 3 TIMES EVERY TIME
“My mom knocks three times every time, so I don’t die.”
NOT TO DRINK ICE WATER
“I had a friend from China who told me not to drink ice water bc I’ll get migraines when I’m middle-aged. That was 20 years ago. I’m now middle-aged. Still no migraines, but maybe my day will come.”
CHICKEN POX AND THE CHICKEN COOP
“When I was a child, I had chicken pox. My mother took me to Mawmaw’s (rural South, obviously), and they made me stand in Mawmaw’s chicken coop.
With absolutely no explanation of what was happening, my mother proceeded to grab a chicken and throw it over my head.”
UNDERGROUND WATER VEINS CAN CAUSE HEALTH ISSUES
“Underground “water veins” can cause health issues if you spend a lot of time above them. Cats can detect them and like to sit in such areas. You can detect such a vein with a pendulum to ensure your work desk or bed isn’t above one.”
SLEEPING WITH A FAN OR AC ON CAN BE DEADLY
“Koreans believe if you are in a room or a car and you sleep with the fan or AC on, you’ll suffocate to death.”
COMIC BOOK SUPERSTITION
“All these superstitions are very generic. Let’s get to some real nonsense If you’re in a comic book store, and the guy behind the counter lets you pick your pack from the box, always pick the pack three below the one on top.”
SALUTING MAGPIES IN THE UK
“Saluting magpies in the UK. It’s usually accompanied by a phrase like “Good morning, mister magpie. How’s your wife and family?” But I’ve heard a few different wordings for it.”
SUPERSTITION OF CROWS CIRCLING
“Where I come from, having crows circle around a certain area, cawing, for an extended period signifies something bad will happen.”
OWL HOOTING
“If an owl hoots outside your home at night, someone in the household might die. So, one has to go out and chase it away when they hear it hoot.”
