Costco is known for its great deals on bulk items, but only some things at the warehouse club are a good value. A user asked the forum, “What do you not buy at Costco because it’s overpriced?”
Here are some responses he got!
HALLOWEEN OR CHRISTMAS ITEMS

“Lately, many seasonal Halloween/Christmas items have been priced way too high.”
FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

“Most of the fruits and vegetables. We just can’t get through it, and even if we could, shopping sales at my local grocery store is more cost-effective.”
BONELESS CHICKEN

“Boneless chicken. That bag should not cost $20.”
BAGELS AND MUFFINS

“The two-pack bakery things like bagels and muffins. It’s just too much.”
PRE-MADE FOOD

“Most grocery stores follow a similar rule: pre-made food is not a good deal. The only exception is that sometimes, pre-made freezer foods are often a decent deal at Costco, but are you going to use all of them?”
MILK

“Aldi is almost always cheaper for milk in my area.”
GROUND BEEF

“I don’t buy ground beef there. My local, regional chain is better pricing and cuts/grinds the meat on site.”
THE FURNITURE

“It may just be my style, but there is no way I’d pay $350 for one chair that doesn’t move (not a recliner or anything) or $1200 for a loveseat (for 2 people) that folds out.”
READY TO BAKE SALMON

“Ready to bake salmon in the fresh food section. $30 for the equivalent of 4 salmon filets, no thanks.”
SAN MARZANO TOMATOES

“I found a 3-pack of 28oz cans of San Marzano Tomatoes for $11.99, but my Walmart sells them cheaper at $3.50 a can.”
AVOCADOS

“They used to be a good deal. But about 2 to 4 years ago, there was a bad growing season. Prices went up $2 or so a bag and never went down. Meanwhile, Walmart now offers the same sized bag at the old Costco price.”
PINEAPPLE

“Pineapple is twice the price of the Sprout’s farmer’s market for the same thing.”
WATERMELON AND POTATOES

“Watermelon is also twice the price of the farmers market. The watermelon is marginally larger, but it isn’t twice as large. Potatoes are also a worse value per pound.”
CHICKEN AND STRAWBERRIES

“I think the days are long gone where I can find chicken at my local Foods Co for $.89 or $.99 on sale, but I can still find it for $1.59 on sale and stock up.
Strawberries are always already moldy in the store. Unless I plan to pick through, wash, and eat in the next two days, it’s a complete waste.”
WAGYU A5 STEAK

“It’s expensive, but I finally got to experience Wagyu A5 steak from Costco. I bought two, and each was $85 (CAD). It was good, really rich, and I enjoyed it, but I will not likely do that again. Better off picking up an entire ribeye (loin) instead.”
