State laws and regulations vary, and while maintaining them is important, some are truly bizarre. A user asked the forum, “What is the weirdest law in your state?”. Let’s look at the top responses from the forum.
PARKING TRUCKS
“Here’s one I found for Florida. You must park your truck indoors after 7 pm.
Since the 1960’s, the city of Coral Gables has prohibited truck owners from parking their vehicles on driveways or on city streets. This law was reinforced in 2011 when the city started to fine people $100 for their first violation and $500 for subsequent violations.”
DETONATING A NUCLEAR DEVICE
“Detonating a nuclear device in Chico, CA is punishable by a $500 fine.”
BARREL WEIGHT
“I can’t think of any in Maryland besides that AR-15s are regulated by barrel weight. It’s just such a weird way to regulate them.”
LIMB BITTING
“Apparently, we had some limb-biting issues going on back in the 19th century. 11-29-1 Penalty for mutilation or disabling. – Every person who shall voluntarily, maliciously, or of purpose put out an eye, slit the nose, ear, or lip, or cut off, bite off, or disable any limb or member of another, shall be imprisoned not exceeding twenty (20) years nor less than one year.”
CATTLE
“Montana has an Open Range law. It is not up to ranchers to contain their cattle. It’s up to others to keep them out. Neighboring cattle broke through the fence and got into our subdivision, damaging some property. The subdivision had to pay for the damage and the new fence.”
FISHING WALES
“Apparently, it’s illegal to fish for whales on a Sunday.
We don’t have whales.”
SALES TAX
“Wisconsinites are supposed to pay back sales tax to the State for any purchases made out of State.
Many local municipalities will restrict the sale of alcohol after 9 pm. The lore is that the Tavern League (a lobbying group for bars in the State) tries to get this passed as it encourages people to go to the bar instead (citation needed).”
MARGARINE
“Wisconsin doesn’t allow the use of margarine in schools or prisons. Also, if a restaurant has margarine on the table, they must also provide butter. Just protecting the dairy industry.”
SHIFTING GEARS
“There’s one law on Utah’s books that while I get the idea of it, I find it completely unenforceable. The law is that it’s illegal to shift gears when driving over railroad tracks. I get the idea behind it of not wanting vehicles stalling out, getting hit by a train, cleanup, etc.
However, how exactly can that be enforced? It really can’t be obvious because such is impossible. Now worst-case scenario, if someone with a manual transmission did shift going over tracks, stalled, got hit, and everything else, how would anyone be able to prove anything on that matter? When the vehicle gets hit, it’ll likely knock everything around so much that it’d be impossible to tell what gear the trans was in when the car stalled out.
That’s probably a strange law, however, not based on something weird that a lot of laws are like with what you’re asking about.”
EATING PEANUTS
“In my hometown of Ridley Park, PA: You are not allowed to walk backward while eating peanuts in front of Barnstormers Theater while a performance is taking place.”
SPITTING
“Spitting is illegal in my town because it spreads tuberculosis. It’s also illegal to drive a horse cart through the town square on a Sunday without a permit. They don’t enforce the first one, and I’m not sure that the other comes up much.”
NATIONAL ANTHEM
“It is illegal to dance to the national anthem in the state of Massachusetts.”
VINTAGE RADIO
“Destroying a vintage radio is illegal.”
ADDITIONAL HOUSING ON THE PROPERTY
“I live in Colorado. Turning most homes into convenience stores or building additional housing on your property is illegal.
Not even kidding. Also, the people then complain about the cost of living, traffic, and crackheads.”
LASER POINTER
“In my hometown, you were prohibited from bringing any sort of laser pointer onto the city-controlled property.”
