Children are naturally curious and adventurous. They explore the world around them with boundless enthusiasm, often oblivious to the potential consequences of their actions.
Even the most innocent childhood acts can have a lasting impact on our adult lives.
A user asked, what is something you did innocently as a child, but now affects the rest of your life?
WEAR HEADPHONES AND PLAY MUSIC
“Wear headphones and play the music as loud as my walkman/Discman would go. Now I have tinnitus.”
ATE LOTS OF JUNK FOOD
KEEPING HEAD DOWN AND FORWARD
“I spent so much time with my head down and forward that I reversed the natural curve of my neck, and now the resulting spurs on the vertebrae pinch nerves down my back and arms, and make it hard to look up or to the side for too long.
Mind your posture, kids.”
PICKING AT SCABS
“Picked at my scabs; now I have dark marks from scars.”
I FELL AND BROKE MY TOOTH
“Fell down when I was around 7 years old and broke my front tooth. Been paying for it at the dentist ever since.”
WEARING TIGHT SHOES
“Used to wear all my sister’s hand-me-downs, including her shoes which were half a size too small for me. My feet are permanently funked. Toes bent in, toenails are a funny shape, and there are scars on the back of the foot just above the heel where the shoe was constantly rubbing. In hindsight, it’s my parent’s fault for not buying me what I needed as I was growing.”
GOING OUTSIDE WITHOUT SUNSCREEN
“Spent every summer outside in the sun with no SPF sunscreen. It may not have even existed then (I was born in 1967). Now I have to see a dermatologist every year for skin checks. I’ve had suspicious moles removed; luckily, no skin cancer (yet).”
SHINING CHEAP LASERS IN YOUR EYES
“I regularly had a contest with my friend to shine those cheap lasers in our eyes to see who could go the longest. yeah”
“Was too lazy to brush my teeth. My parents didn’t seem to notice if I did or not. I’d probably only do it for like 30 seconds every other day. And only ever once a day. I’m now facing lots of expensive treatment and having to pay to go private because getting an NHS dentist is nigh on impossible”
USING A LAPTOP WHILE LYING DOWN
“I used to use my laptop lying on one side with my arm propping up my head, for hours and hours.
I have permanent back alignment issues.”
“Hid my emotions because I was trying to be “manly.” Now I have psychological issues from trying to be someone other than myself, not to mention high blood pressure, back and neck pain, hair loss, and several other ailments.”
“Competitive cheerleading. Rest in peace to my ankles (I broke twice), knees (strained and nearly tore both ACLs), and back forever. I get recurring muscle spasms in my back from all the shocks I absorbed doing flips and such that are so painful that I have to lie down until they go away.
I don’t regret it much, though. It was one of the few things I enjoyed.”
EATING TOO MUCH SALT
“Put salt on everything (except sweet stuff, of course), and now I have high blood pressure and an irregular heartbeat.”
“Reading/watching fiction. You’re taught that the good is always rewarded and that bad things hardly happen to them; the bad are always punished. It’s not true, and it becomes one of the most depressing things when you’re an adult. When you eventually realize that your favorite stories and fairytale are just that, it kind of makes the world seem hopeless, sometimes.”
“Played baseball. I pitched through high school and college(I pitched from all most side arm positions). At 39, I can not lift my right arm over my head without serious pain. Two shoulder surgeries still in pain. Don’t know how guys can pitch for years in the big leagues.”
