Respecting other people’s boundaries, especially while attending an event hosted by them is a must.
The Original Poster (OP) took it to the forum, and asked “Am I wrong for bringing meat to my sister’s vegan wedding?”. We want to know from you.
BACKSTORY
OP’s sister is a hardcore vegan. OP has two kids – Cassy and Chase.
VEGAN WEDDING
OP’s sister’s wedding allowed kids, but it was a vegan wedding.
OP WAS GRATEFUL
OP was grateful that her sister’s wedding allowed kids, because she didn’t want to leave her children with a babysitter.
CHASE’S HABIT
Chase has been going through a phase where he picks one food and sticks with it for months. OP tried offering him other foods, but he just sticks to the chosen food.
He ends up throwing a huge tantrum when he doesn’t get what he wants.
SAUSAGE ROLLS
Chase’s chosen food this time was sausage rolls. OP knew that if he got fussy at the wedding he would cause a disturbance.
Cassy also tends to want things that her brother has but usually gets sick of them after 2-3 weeks.
WHAT DID OP DO?
OP had packed a lot of them since if her brother had eaten them all then Cassy would’ve started an uproar.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
Everything was fine until OP got asked by her son if there were any sausage rolls, she had given him some and asked Cassy if she wanted any but she declined as she had gotten tired of them fairly early. OP still had a lot left.
One of the guests, OP’s sister’s friend Matt, must’ve seen this. So, he came over and asked OP for one. She didn’t think much of it and handed him one.
A FEW MORE PEOPLE ASKED FOR SAUSAGE ROLLS
A few minutes after Matt had come up to OP, two more people did. She had declined this time because it felt a little rude. But the friends left with an annoyed expression.
Then OP’s daughter returned to her after playing with the other kids and changed her mind and wanted some. OP let her grab some, and then she ran again.
OP’S SISTER GOT UPSET
OP’s sister then came up to her with an angry face and told OP that her giving out non-veg to people at her vegan wedding was disrespectful.
OP Tried Explaining
OP tried explaining the situation, and her sister ended up saying, “No one else’s kids are acting like this, they’re all fine with the food. Maybe if you were a better parent, Chase wouldn’t be in this phase to begin with”.
OP Snapped
OP snapped and told her about how her friends didn’t even like the food made by her. She also said some hurtful and immature things. Then OP got up and left with her kids.
OP’s sister blocked her from everywhere and all of their family and friends are criticizing OP for what she had done.
Now OP wants to know if what she did was wrong.
WHAT DO PEOPLE THINK?
“You’re the reason child-free weddings are a thing.”, said one user.
This Is Not Right
“I’m child-free/not a parent so I always have trouble empathizing with posts like this – but wasn’t there a kid that went blind or something because he was only eating French fries?
I can’t imagine a world where my parents didn’t make me eat vegetables. When I did have an alternative diet under their roof, it was because I’d become a vegetarian.
They, who were not, still helped to make sure I was getting the proteins/nutrients I needed. I can’t imagine having a kid and being like ‘It’s cool, eat trash for three months straight.’”, said another user.
