Being a clean freak is one thing and making it compulsory for guests to wear raincoats indoors to prevent germs from breeding is totally another!

An internet user asked, “Am I a jerk for requiring that guests change clothes before they sit on my furniture?”. Here’s the full story for your context.

Backstory

The Original Poster (OP) is a 20-year-old male who lives alone. OP is a very neat person. OP’s mother kept their house pristine growing up and he helped her for as long as he can remember.

OP’s Recent Concern

OP recently moved out into his own place and something that OP started thinking about was how many germs from outside we all track into our houses. OP always changes out of his clothes as soon as he gets home but whenever he has guests, they don’t.

“I have no idea where they’ve been or what their clothes have been exposed to.”, says OP.

About a month ago, OP bought a bunch of those clear disposable raincoats and he started telling people he invited over that they could bring a change of fresh clothes to change into or wear one of the coats before they sit on his furniture. OP also offers to wash the clothes that they change out of if they want to.

OP’s girlfriend doesn’t have a problem with this and started just leaving clothes at OP’s place. OP’s mom and his little sister have also been okay with this new rule.

What Happened Yesterday

OP invited a friend over yesterday (he told them about the clothes thing before they came) and when they got there, they were surprised that OP actually enforced it and said, “You’ve got to be messing with me”.

OP told them, no, he was serious and then they left. They haven’t been answering his messages either.

OP’s Mom’s Opinion

OP was talking to his mom about it today and she said it was pretty excessive and unreasonable to expect everybody to do.

“I disagree but I’m kind of double guessing myself. Am I in the wrong here?”, asks OP.

You Have OCD, My Friend

“You’re the jerk. You have OCD, my friend. Yes, there are germs out there, but the likelihood of them doing harm to you is near zero. This type of thing gets worse over time, so get help now.”

You Should Consult A Psychologist

“You’re the jerk. Your mom is right — it is excessive and unreasonable for you to expect people to change clothes when they come over (assuming you don’t suffer from some sort of condition that makes you unusually susceptible to infection). I’m not a psychologist but it sounds like you should consult one.”

Don’t Expect Any Friends To Visit, Ever

“Wow….just wow. Words cannot describe how socially unaware this post is. You can go with the ‘My house/My rules’ mentality but don’t expect any friends to visit, ever. Who the hell regularly visits a friend with a change of clothes in hand?”

This Is An Unrealistic Expectation

“This is an unrealistic expectation. If you’re this much of a germaphobe: 1) get help and 2) don’t have people over.

I wouldn’t be back or respond either. I would absolutely think you were joking if you told me that ahead of time and then, if you tried to enforce it, I would think you were crazy as hell.”

That Sounds Really Unpleasant

“Nobody wants to wear a plastic raincoat indoors. That sounds really unpleasant. I suppose you’re free to have whatever bizarre rules you want for your own home, but pretty much everyone is going to do exactly what your friend did and leave.

I don’t know if that makes you an idiot. It makes you a person who is destined to be very lonely.”
