Starting high school often comes with societal expectations to conform and follow the crowd. A user asked the forum, “College students, what’s the one high school habit each incoming freshman needs to stop doing on their first day of college?” Here are the top responses.
COMING LATE ISN’T A BIG DEAL
“Your life isn’t over if you walk into class late. Calmly, go in and take a seat. You’ll be fine.”
DON’T MAKE EXCUSES
“Making up excuses to a professor if you miss the due date for an assignment. It isn’t that they aren’t listening; they will not care.”
DON’T GET EMBARRASSED WHEN FAMILY COMES
“Stop being so embarrassed when your family phones you/come over. They probably live very far away and came here to see you, show them some love.”
DON’T PLAGIARIZE
“Don’t plagiarize. We’ll catch you. If we do, confess! The first several times, the students said, ‘I don’t know how that happened.’ Remember that uncommon knowledge should be cited.”
YOU NEED TO STUDY
“You need to study. If you had it easy in high school, it likely would not be that way in college.”
DON’T PUT YOUR PHONE ON VIBRATION MODE
“Putting your phone on vibrate is not the same as putting your phone on silent. Everyone can hear your phone buzz. Everyone can also see you texting during lectures; hiding your phone under your desk fools no one.”
DON’T PUT MAKEUP IN THE MIDDLE OF CLASS
“Putting on makeup in the middle of class. No one cares anymore. Some people drag themselves out of bed wearing a t-shirt and sweatpants.”
STOP CHECKING FACEBOOK
“Stop checking Facebook every 3 seconds. It’s amazing how much time it will free up for you.”
BE BOLD
“Dress better than you did before, and if there is anything you don’t like about your personality (too shy, etc), change it the first day. Be bold and act like who you want to be. Everyone will assume that is how you always are, and after a week or two, your new self will be your new self.”
START GYMING
“This isn’t so much of a stop doing but a start doing. Gym. Everyday. If you work out daily, you’ll feel better, look better, and have a better life.”
DON’T HESITATE TO ASK
“If you don’t understand something in your classes, ask. For god’s sake, ask. People might judge you for being ‘that guy,’ but forget them, you are paying for this. Learn something, don’t just show up.”
DON’T USE ICEBREAKERS
“Don’t use any icebreakers. Just relax, everyone is freaking out just like you are.”
PLAN BETTER
“Plan for things taking longer than you expect. You don’t have your parents to remind you about that paper that’s due the next day, and waiting until it’s due can mess up your schedule.”
DON’T TALK DURING LECTURES
“Talking during a lecture is no longer cool. I pay absurd amounts of money to listen to the professor’s pontificate, different from what you did last weekend. Go on Facebook chat and stop disturbing others, especially if you’re speaking French.”
DON’T BE AFRAID TO GET A TUTOR
“Do not be afraid to get a tutor. Lose your pride when it comes to learning. If you do not know something, teach it yourself or get help. Some high schools leave you woefully unprepared to handle certain classes. Usually, many alternative learning supplements can help you on your way.”
DON’T CARE WHAT OTHERS THINK ABOUT YOU
“Freshman, quit caring about what people think about you. Be yourself, so long as you’re not a jerk, and you’ll do fine.”
DON’T DEBATE WITH YOUR PROFESSOR OVER RELIGION
“If you’re a freshman with strong religious beliefs, don’t get offended whenever you take your first philosophy class. Don’t try to debate your professor over the existence of god. All you’ll do is either get a verbal smackdown or drag out and interrupt the lecture. Thus gaining the hatred of your classmates.”
DON’T FEEL ENTITLED
“Don’t feel entitled. It would help if you took a professional leg with your professor. Have you missed a day? Email them and be professional about it. Don’t skip just because you want, though. On the days you truly need a downer, they’ll lose faith and get suspicious and, thus, become unwilling to assist.”
BE DISCIPLINED
“Discipline. You will wake up one day and realize you are 15 minutes late for class. You may decide not to go. The next class period, the professor says nothing. It doesn’t tell you about the major assignment they assigned. He doesn’t chastise you for missing.
You may think you got off scot-free. You may skip a few more classes. No one is disciplining you. There are no calls about truancy to parents. Then, the final exam happens. You don’t recognize half the material.
People turn in 20-page essays that they know nothing about. All that free time where you thought you were getting off easy becomes a huge regret. Stay focused and discipline yourself rather than going through this scenario because no one will be a grownup for you.”
