Is the tipping culturebecoming increasingly harmful, with waiters pressuring customers for tips?
An internet user asked, “What are your thoughts about waiters harassing people over tips?”.
OP says, “Since when did it become my responsibility to feed the waiter? If tipping is such a big part of the ‘culture’ it should become a law. Or restaurants should just put up a board saying it’s mandatory to pay 15% of the sum AFTER taxes as a ‘tip’ or we will harass you.
People have forgotten what a tip actually means. If I feel like you did something exceptional for me, I would tip you myself. Why should I pay you more than your hourly wage for doing your job?
Literally, no shame in ruining people’s mood by begging for tips and asking them to keep 15% of their budget for a tip. Rant over.”.
Below, we’ve compiled people’s responses!
I Would Never Stand For This Sort Of Thing

“I worked as a server for a number of years, and I would never stand for this sort of thing.
Some people tip generously. Some don’t tip at all. The better the place, the more likely they will tip well, although not always.
Regardless, of whether the tip is huge or the tip is 0, it’s very bad form to say anything about it at all, one way or the other.
Thank them for their patronage, wave and smile, and then quietly check your tip AFTER they’ve left. That’s how it’s *supposed* to work.”
Happened With Me Too!

“I was at a Stereo bar a couple of weeks ago. Bought 3 rounds of drinks from the same bartender, who I tipped 18% each round.
Before I headed out, I got a bottle of water from her and when I didn’t tip she told me to get the hell off and that I’m cheap.
Why the hell am I supposed to tip you for handing me a water bottle?”
I’ll Never Go Back To The Place

“It’s only happened to me once. I tipped well but the person I was with (who was visiting Montreal) didn’t tip upto their standard and the waiter confronted him about it.
I had a decent time at the place, but I’ll never go back.”
Tipping Ruins Most Food Buying Experiences

“Cafés, bakeries, and other to-go places all ask for tips with the card reader now when ordering.
But you often have to tip before they prepare the food or drink or whatever and honestly, that’s not a tip, it’s a bribe.
Maybe I’m sensitive to it, but the whole tipping thing really ruins most food-buying experiences for me now. So hostile.”
I’d Make Sure I Don’t Go Back Or Recommend Anybody

“People can harass me for tips, but (and I know it won’t matter to the staff working) I will never go back to your establishment or recommend it to anyone I know.”
I Disagree

“I absolutely disagree. The Canadian government should set up a 3-year plan to OUTLAW tipping and require restaurants to pay people a living wage. I want to have a decent waiter on a Tuesday night.
I tip adequately when there is service at my table, it’s 15%. I do not tip if I’m picking up from the restaurant. I have to carry my own tray.
If you think I’m tipping at the supermarket, the dep, the casino or Walmart, you need your head examined.
Heck, at the casino they don’t even bring drinks around anymore. They set up stations to get your own. Nope Nope Nope Nope.”
They Can Expect A 15% Tip But They Can’t Berate Others

“A friend got yelled at in a restaurant in Chinatown because he did not tip (he was pretty much broke at the time, as well as cultural differences regarding tipping)
Do I think servers can expect a 15% tip? Yes.
Do I think they have the right to berate customers for not tipping? Absolutely not.”
It Was 7 Years Ago And I Never Went Back

“I had a waiter comment on other people in my group’s tipping over 7 years ago at Frites Alors, I have never been back to one since.”
I’ve Stopped Tipping

“I stopped tipping and sometimes I get the death stare from the waiter. The price of everything is going up and my salary isn’t matching the inflation rate.
I can’t be giving tips to everyone, I need to pay my bills. I only eat at restaurants like once or twice per year now because of the tipping culture.”
Wouldn’t Tip And Leave A Negative Review

“I wouldn’t tip and leave a negative review. Unless the person did something extra nice I don’t see why bringing me a 200-gram plate from the kitchen to my table is worthy of a tip.
I’ve brought 60 lbs of stuff from the warehouse to clients on a daily basis in my student job and I can count on my hand the amount of time I’ve got a tip.
If anyone, it should be the cooks standing in the heat and the guy that does the dishes that get a tip.”
You Should Tip 15% For Okay Service, It’s North American Culture

“North America is a tipping culture, like it or not.
You should tip 15% for okay service. Tip more to communicate that you think the service was particularly good, or less to communicate that you think the service was particularly bad.
I don’t let myself be robbed though. I give 0% to businesses that have a tipping option on their credit card reader without actually really offering any service. For example self-serve frozen yogurt places, or stores.”
It’s Just The Culture But It Needs To Go!

“We live in Montreal, it’s just the culture. It’s weird and I don’t agree with it, so I don’t eat out much for sure but honestly, tips to live need to go.”
Tipping Can Simply Be Looked At As ‘Progressive’ Pricing

“I totally disagree. Tipping can simply be looked at as ‘progressive’ pricing. Broke jerks don’t have to tip and their broke servers can or can’t show their disappointment.
That’s hardly a dynamic that requires a ‘nanny’ law to fix. If tips were banned…everyone would pay more…except big tippers…who would pay much less.
Do you want to subsidize rich people’s outings simply so you don’t have to face the potential ire of a waitstaff you didn’t tip?”
That’s Kinda Cheap On Your Part

“Their base salary is less, their work is worth because there is an understanding that clients WILL tip. If you’re not tipping, then they are paid less than their work is worth, so that’s kinda cheap on your part.
Yes, tipping culture is awful and hopefully it changes, but in the meantime, I don’t think it’s the employee who should receive unfair treatment because some clients want to abuse the fact that tips are an unwritten rule.
I do think that tipping should not be a thing and salaries should be higher, but chances are restaurant owners will rise prices to adjust which will amount to the same result.”
