We often tend to underestimate ourselves and self-sabotage. It ruins the peace and happiness of our life.
A user asked the forum, “What is something people tend to be ashamed of but shouldn’t be?” Here are the top responses.
NOT BEING FULLY DRESSED
“As a paramedic, I can’t even recall the number of people who have apologized for not being fully dressed when we show up. 9/10 of these are older adults who fell and couldn’t get up or people so sick/incapacitated that they physically couldn’t get dressed.
- It’s nothing to be embarrassed about; we genuinely don’t care and will forget it sooner than you think.
- You very likely don’t have anything we haven’t seen before.
- Yes, if you happen to be covered in excrement, urine, or vomit, it does make the whole situation a bit worse, but it’s nothing we haven’t dealt with. You aren’t the first and won’t be the last; it’s nothing to feel wrong about.”
MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES
“Mental health issues. Nobody should ever be ashamed of mental health struggles.
Unfortunately, people love to say how supportive they are until things hit the fan. Then nobody wants to touch you with a 10-foot pole because you acted what they considered ‘crazy.’
I’m a millennial, so we all love to say how progressively we think of mental health, yet when we go sideways with a friend or family member, people seem to change their minds.”
YEAST INFECTIONS
“Okay, this is so specific, but yeast infections. They’re a lot more common than you would think.’
MAKING MISTAKES
“Making mistakes. It’s part of the learning process to mess up sometimes. As long as you learn from it, you’re fine.”
CELLULITE
“Cellulite. It’s not a condition. It’s only advertised like that by people selling snake oil.”
NEEDING HELP
“People find it hard to say ‘I need help’ and ‘Hey, I don’t know how to do this.’ They mentally shame themselves for seeking help.”
CRYING AND HOLDING IN FLATULENCE
“As a man: crying. It feels relieving to cry alone but like holding in flatulence around others.”
MUSIC CHOICE
“Their choice in music.”
APPEARANCE
“Thinking that there is something wrong with their appearance, usually however an imagination, we should instead tell ourselves that we are okay as we are.”
BEING LAZY
“Being lazy sometimes. Almost everyone is. But all the time, people try to justify, rationalize, or hide it. When it’s nothing to be ashamed of and super normal, everyone’s tired, we should be able to lay around until noon or spend the day video gaming or watching TV when we have the time and no other obligations.”
APOLOGIZING
“Apologizing. People who claim they are ashamed of apologizing are ashamed of being wrong. They can’t handle or accept it, so they don’t want to apologize.”
ADDICTION
“Addiction or coping mechanisms of any kind that result from trauma as long as you try to overcome it. Regardless if it’s drugs, alcohol, food, etc.”
HAVING MEDICAL CONDITIONS
“People who have a medical condition that causes weight gain or fluid retention.”
SPEAKING SPANISH WITH A GRINGO ACCENT
“Speaking Spanish with a super gringo accent. Yes, I do speak for all of us. You don’t understand how much it means to us that you would try. I applaud you every single time.
You have a better attitude than half my family who don’t speak Spanish because they’re not going to sound like they’re from Mexico, so they don’t try. Look at how much they miss out by having a bad attitude- not you, though. You get it. I love you for that.
People like you give me hope, and since I’m half-white- you make me proud of us, too. Nobody expects you to sound like you’re from Mexico; we like you the way you are. Everybody has an accent, anyway. You should be proud of yourself because that’s like some super anti-racist thing to do.”
LOSING A JOB
“Losing a job. It happens to many people. We aren’t perfect, and life can get in the way of work performance, company politics, bad coworkers and managers, etc. Overall, companies are rarely forgiving. So, forgive yourself and move past it. It’s a setback, that’s all.”
