Hygiene is important for everyone, but it can be a sensitive topic for kids. It’s important to be patient and understanding when teaching them about hygiene, and to avoid making them feel embarrassed or ashamed.
The Original Poster (OP) took it to the forum, and asked “Am I wrong for turning off a video game that my son and his friends were playing?”. We want to know from you.
BACKSTORY
OP’s son and his friends had a sleepover at his place.
WHAT DID THEY DO?
They had gone swimming and played at the park before coming back to his place to play video games in the living room.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
OP got them pizza. After a while, OP got overwhelmed by the smell of their armpits because everyone was sweating after they returned from the park.
WHAT DID OP ASK THEM TO DO?
OP told them to put on deodorant and they said okay.
THEY STILL HADN’T WASHED UP
After a while, OP checked in with them and found out they still hadn’t washed up.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
OP again told them to put on some deodorant. At this point, they started resisting and said that they were not going to put on deodorant as they already did put it on the previous night.
THE KIDS DIDN’T BUDGE
OP told them that even if they put it on last night, it had gotten washed off at the pool. She also said that they were sweating from all the running at the park, so they needed to put it on once again.
The kids ignored what OP had to say and continued playing the game.
WHAT DID OP DO?
OP turned off their video game. According to them they were just about to pass a difficult level when OP turned it off. All of them got very upset because of this.
WHAT DID OP’S SON SAY?
OP’s son later told him that he was embarrassed in front of his friends because of what happened.
Now OP wants to know if what she did was wrong.
WHAT DO PEOPLE THINK?
“They are kids, they do this sort of thing. You definitely embarrassed your son in front of his friends for a relatively minor issue. I will say it is a lesson they need to learn. Being smelly as an adult is embarrassing, so teaching kids hygiene is important.”, said one user.
YOU COULD HAVE DONE THIS DIFFERENTLY
“The issue isn’t what OP was trying to teach, it’s how they went about it. Teaching a kid hygiene is fine. Teaching it by humiliating them in front of their friends isn’t.”, said another user.
