Having children is often described as an extraordinary experience, but what if your family has some unusual traditions?  A user took to the forum and asked, “Am I wrong for not buying my sister what was on her registry?”

The Original Poster (OP) is a 29-year-old woman with a younger sister who is 26 years old and pregnant

Recently, her sister had a baby shower and created a registry of items she needed for the baby. However, OP did not purchase anything from the registry. Instead, she ordered custom-made onesies with her niece’s name on them and a changing pad.

OP Didnt Have Much Money

Due to the cost of caring for her geriatric dog, OP did not have much money to spend on gifts. Nevertheless, OP believed that the gifts she gave were cute and meaningful, and she assumed that her sister would also receive many other presents.

What Happened Next?

After the baby shower, OP’s sister pulled OP aside and inquired why she hadn’t selected anything from her registry. OP explained that she found the custom-made onesies and changing pad adorable and that the registry was only a suggestion.

Sister Was Frustrated

However, her sister was frustrated and claimed that the registry items were what she needed and that OP’s gifts were useless. She then walked away.

Later, OP discovered that her sister had spoken to their mother, who expressed disappointment that OP didn’t choose anything from the registry. According to her mother, OP should have selected something from the registry, as she knew how important it was to her sister, and it would have been helpful.

OP is upset after the incident because she was excited about the custom-made onesies and changing pad she had given as a gift and had no idea that the registry was so crucial to her sister.

Not Wrong

“Registry IS just a suggestion. Gifts are supposed to be given freely and accepted graciously. She’s acting entitled.”

It’s Obnoxious

“I don’t know when registries stopped being a way to let people who need ideas know what you’d like and started being a requirement, but it’s obnoxious.”

It’s Rude

“She got things specifically meaningful, not a vacuum. She got custom onesies, which is not something she would get multiples of, and clothes are always something a new mom needs.

She doesn’t have much money, and still found a way to contribute something thoughtful she thought her sister would like.

I think it’s rude to insist someone buys off a registry for showers + weddings, especially when you’re not considering everyone’s financial situation. Even more so to call someone out on it, and call a meaningful gift “useless”.”
