People who don’t consider other people’s problems or conveniences while living in a neighborhood must be called out, no matter what! A netizen recently asked, “Am I a jerk for complaining and making the neighbor change their roof color?”.

Let us know what you think in the comments section!

BACKSTORY

A new house was built directly below the Original Poster’s (OP’s) house, and they painted their metal roof white. OP’s place has huge windows and a balcony above the roof, so they found it very reflective and blinding.

WHAT DID OP FIND OUT?

OP thought they could just deal with it, but it was too much, so they looked up the city’s regulations, and it turned out that it’s not allowed to use that color.

THE CITY OFFICIAL’S REMARK

Her partner called the city and asked them to check, and the city official told them the neighbors lied on their paperwork and had originally said they would paint the roof black.

WHAT HAPPENED EVENTUALLY?

The neighbors had to repaint the roof and apologize to everyone in the neighborhood. But they have also clarified that they want nothing to do with OP’s family.

“They have a kid the same age as ours as well, which is unfortunate as maybe we would have been able to have playdates if this hadn’t happened.”, says OP.

OP’S THOUGHTS RIGHT NOW

OP and their partner feel like they made the right decision as the roof is more tolerable since it’s no longer white.

“They also knew they were building a house below ours, and none of the other houses have white roofs (because of regulation), so it’s a little rude that they didn’t think of the impact the roof would have on us. So, am I a jerk for talking to the city about their roof?” asks OP.

IT WAS BREAKING CITY CODES

“Not the jerk. It was distracting and broke city codes. You could have filled balloons with paint and thrown them onto their roof, but your way was faster. They’re lucky the city made them paint it, not tear it off.”

THEY CHOSE TO DEFRAUD THE SYSTEM

“Some council regulations are stupid, but they’re there for a reason. They could’ve applied for permission but chose to defraud the system. They’re lucky they didn’t get their occupation certificate taken off.”

THEY MADE THE CHOICE TO LIE

“Not the jerk because I can see how white would be blinding at times. However, I also understand why they wouldn’t want to associate with you. You aren’t a jerk because of that, though; they chose to lie in their paperwork.”

THE REGULATIONS EXIST FOR A REASON

“Not the jerk. The regulations ensure that your neighboring houses do not behave like a jerk. Your neighbor messed around and found out.”

THEY WERE BEING HUGELY INCONSIDERATE

“Not the jerk. Your neighbors knew what they were doing, so they were hugely inconsiderate to you. Not someone you want to be friends with anyway! You had to report the problem to address it, as their selfishness directly impacted your comfort. Preventing that is what the regulations are for.”

THEY SHOULD HAVE HAD THE COMMON SENSE

“Not the jerk. A metal roof painted white and angled toward your house must feel like staring into the sun. I don’t know how you could have possibly lived with that long-term. They should have had the common sense to choose something slightly less reflective, even if they didn’t want a black roof.”

THE RIGHT THING TO DO IS ASK FIRST

“You’re the jerk. The right thing to do is to ask first. You backstabbed them by going straight to the council. I wouldn’t want anything to do with you after a stunt like that, either. If you’d asked and they refused, and then you went to the council, that’s another story.”
