Pranks became common, and it was pretty annoying and not safe. As a mother, she decided to give her son a punishment for playing a prank on her sister.
A user asked the forum, “Am I a jerk for making my son clean up after his sister in the bathroom?” Let’s see what happened.
BACKSTORY
The original poster OP (40 F) has two children, “Dax” (M12) and “Mia” (F14). (Not real names for privacy.)
Her kids don’t get along super well. Her son Dax thinks “pranks” are really funny. OP says that, like every 12-year-old boy, he annoys Mia with them a lot.
PRANKS ARE A SOURCE OF FIGHT
OP says that it’s something she and her husband have been working on as it’s the source of many fights between them. Dax gets a lot of prank ideas from YouTube and TikTok and often recurs what he sees.
HE WENT TOO FAR
She also added that most of them are harmless (something like a fake spider in her food etc.), but this time he went too far. She says Dax thought it would be funny to put Saran Wrap over the toilet before her daughter went to the bathroom.
He says he got the idea online.
IT WAS A TERRIBLE PRANK
OP feels that it was a terrible prank. She also says that he put plastic wrap under the toilet seat so if someone sits on it, it pretty much makes a mess instead of going in the bowl.
It turns out that he does this right before Mia goes into the bathroom to pee.
OP says that when she gets in there, she sits on the seat like normal and pees, and since there’s plastic wrap over the hole, her pee collects on it and gets everywhere, all around the ground, on the toilet, and on her. She came to OP crying.
SHE IS EMBARRASSED
OP says she’s embarrassed because she’s a teenage girl, which is disgusting. OP told Mia to shower and not worry about the mess. OP says that here’s where she might be a jerk.
OP YELLED AT HER SON
She went to her son and yelled at him for what he did. OP told him that was not an appropriate prank, and he was old enough to know that it was not OK.
Then, OP made him clean it up.
HER SON STARTED CRYING
OP says he started crying, saying it’s unfair that she made him clean his sister’s pee. Her son said that it was gross and he would be sick. He also said it was from her body, so she should clean it.
OP THINKS HE NEEDS TO LEARN
OP says it was all his fault and his mess to deal with. She says that she doesn’t know why she should humiliate my daughter further or why she should have to clean it. OP says that he needs to learn.
OP told her son that the mess was his fault and he should think about the repercussions of his actions next time because this is what his prank caused.
Then, OP stood in the doorway and watched as she made him clean the urine off the floor and toilet.
IT IS AN APPROPRIATE PUNISHMENT
OP thinks that it was an appropriate punishment considering it’s just the natural consequence of what he did. It doubles as a general lesson in how to clean a toilet which he has to learn at some point anyway.
OP’S HUSBAND DISAGREES
OP’s husband disagrees with what she did. OP says that this all happened while he was at work, and after he got home, Dax complained to him.
OP’s husband told her she was overly harsh on their son and put him in danger by exposing him to germs.
HE WAS UNDER SUPERVISION
But OP says she gave him the gloves she uses when washing the toilet, and it’s not like he was unsupervised.
But OP’s husband is mad at her and tells her that she went too far and that’s bad parenting.
HER SON IS MAD AT HER
OP says that her son is mad at her too. But her daughter is on her side. OP asks if she is a bad mom.
ASK YOUR HUSBAND TO CLEAN
“Not a jerk, but your husband is, and you can see why Dax thinks it’s OK to pull this on his sister. What is your husband on about ‘You put him in danger by exposing him to germs’? He cleaned a toilet. We all do it.
In fact, lots of 12-year-olds do it as part of their chores. You should ask your husband if he’d prefer it if he left Dax’s messes for him to clean up when he finishes work in the future.”
YOUR HUSBAND SHOULD BACK YOU UP
“You were right. There wouldn’t have been pee on the floor if he hadn’t played his stupid prank. Your husband should back you up. He isn’t doing Dax any good.
I am tempted to advocate for his internet access to be restricted; he has shown he isn’t using it responsibly. Btw, what did your husband think was suitable punishment?”
HE SHOULD BE MAD AT HIMSELF
“No, that makes you the parent. Parenting isn’t a popularity contest. He is in control of having access to things; he just has to follow reasonable guidelines. He chooses not to, so there are consequences. He should be mad at himself.”
LET YOUR KID LEARN
“Not a jerk. Your kid is learning what it means to reap the consequences of his actions.”
