Is it essential for couples to share household chores equally? This is a common challenge that requires discussion.
A user asked the forum, “Am I a jerk for refusing to cook for my wife anymore after she ate 3 of my prepped meals?”. You must read the complete story to decide for yourself.
BACKSTORY
The Original Poster’s (OP) wife doesn’t cook in his household. He says that she is really bad at it, and it’s just easier on their taste buds if he cooks for them.
Earlier that year, they both decided it was time for them to get back in shape; he researched some macro/calorie-friendly cooking recipes and got big into meal prepping.
SHE QUIT
His wife stuck with it for a few weeks but ultimately decided to quit.
Luckily, this wasn’t too much of an issue for him.
HIS WORK ROUTINE
OP says his wife is a nurse and frequently works much later than he does. His typical work day is from 6 am to 2 pm.
HOW DOES OP MANAGE?
OP says he makes his meals and does the meal prep for next week on his weekly day off. He continues to make dinner every day, like he did prior.
He says that he does six days’ worth of 3 meals when he prepares meals. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and swap around lunch and dinner.
WHAT DID OP ASSUME?
Last week on Thursday, he planned on coming back Friday morning and stopping through the home, grabbing anything he needed, then heading into the office.
This was known for weeks in advance, so he didn’t spring this on his wife. He says that he figured she could ensure she and their kid got dinner that night and breakfast next morning.
THE REAL ISSUE STARTED
The next morning, he was running late and drove home looking for his last breakfast and lunch for the week, and they were gone.
He says that he doesn’t have time to ask his wife, nor does he want to wake her up early before her shift, so he just goes.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
OP ends up skipping breakfast and lunch. He got off of work, and he was starving and decided he was just gonna eat dinner early, and when he looked for his dinner for that night, it was not there.
OP says that it set him off; when his wife gets home, he asks her what’s up, and she admits to eating the meals.
WHAT DID OP ASK HIS WIFE?
He told her that he had portioned out food for an entire day, and she ate all of it in a single night.
She said it was his fault as he didn’t make anything for her and their kid to eat, and he just left the meal prepped things, so they had to eat those.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
They got into an argument, and she told him that he was being selfish.
So after that incident, he decided that if he was selfish for expecting her to feed herself for one night, he would just not cook anymore as he was doing a lot of work for a selfish person.
WHAT DID OP DO FINALLY?
For the past week, he made his meal prep meals and stored them at work and let her figure out what she wanted to do for dinner by herself.
OP says that he still cooks for their kid, but only one portion is small enough for him to eat by himself.
HOW DOES OP’S WIFE FEEL?
He told her that he would keep this up and that she should learn to cook for herself if she was not happy about it.
OP says that his wife told him that she’s too tired when she comes home from work to cook and that he was being incredibly petty.
He thinks that he was justified and he was pushing her to learn a life skill she should have by now. OP asks if he is a jerk.
EVERY ADULT SHOULD KNOW TO COOK
“Not a jerk. Cooking is one of those things every adult SHOULD know and CAN learn. If she doesn’t WANT to learn, then she can pay more for pre-packaged meals.”
IT IS UNFAIR
“Not a jerk.
Both work, both are exhausted after work, yet only one is willing to prepare food while the other person just calls them selfish because they are incapable of preparing food whilst still being an adult.”
YOUR WIFE NEEDS TO LEARN
Your wife needs to learn the moral behind “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.”
SHE IS NOT HELPLESS
“Not a jerk. She’s a grown woman with a child, no less. Grilled cheese, spaghetti, sandwiches. She’s not helpless.”
